Jack Mizzi: The Candidate Master with a Tactical Flair
Meet Jack Mizzi, the chess wizard who proudly holds the title of Candidate Master from FIDE. Jack’s journey through the 64 squares is nothing short of epic, filled with dramatic comebacks, tactical fireworks, and a touch of humor that keeps both opponents and spectators entertained.
Starting from humble beginnings in 2016, Jack’s Blitz rating skyrocketed from a modest 683 to an impressive peak over 2650 in 2025—a rating that many grandmasters would envy. This speedy player thrives under the pressure of fast-paced games, showcasing a lightning-fast style particularly dominant in Bullet chess, where Jack’s win rate soars above 56%, leaving pawns and kings alike trembling.
Jack’s playing style is a fascinating blend of patience and aggression. Boasting an average of about 61 moves per win, Jack knows when to grind through endgames (a hefty 60% frequency!) and when to launch swift strikes. His psychological resilience is legendary, bouncing back from setbacks with a remarkable 70% comeback rate and winning over 97% of encounters even after losing a piece. You could say Jack refuses to fold—unless it’s just to savor the victory with style.
When it comes to openings, Jack holds his cards close to the vest, favoring "Top Secret" lines that have confounded opponents through 12,615 Blitz games alone. His longest winning streak? An audacious 37 consecutive victories, matched by a current streak that keeps the chess world on edge.
Off the board, Jack is a strategic thinker not just in Chess but at life, with a unique tilt factor hinting that sometimes even the calmest Candidate Master has that moment of “Wait, did I just blunder my queen AGAIN?”
Whether it’s a slow Daily grind or a bullet-speed Blitz, Jack Mizzi keeps proving that combinations and courage make a deadly mix on the 64 squares. Opponents beware; when Jack’s in the zone, even your best moves might need a rethink.
In the words of Jack: “Chess is 99% tactics and 1% not losing your mind after blundering a rook.”

Snapshot
- Peak blitz rating: 2677 (2025-05-21)
- When you win most often:
What you’re already doing well
- Versatile Fianchetto Repertoire. With both colours you feel at home in Catalan/KID-style positions and often steer the game there early.
- Tactical alertness. 19.Ne6! against BadTheory1 and 37.Rxd8# versus Rutvij09 show that you calculate quickly and aren’t afraid of sharp lines.
- Practical clock management when ahead. In most victories you finished with 10-20 s to spare, keeping pressure on opponents who were in time trouble.
Recurring themes to fix
- Unsafe pawn storms. In both losses to Jerome Villanueva you pushed …h5/…h4 far too early, weakening g6 & f6. Follow the three-piece rule: launch a pawn only when three pieces back it up.
- Over-pressing equal positions. Against mt104 you rejected simple consolidation (…Re8, …Nd6) and played …Ne4?! which lost material. Remember: with Black an equal end-game is fine.
- Conversion technique. You were +5 vs brhath yet got mated. Add a “What’s my opponent’s threat?” check before every move when winning.
- Basic rook endings. Several detours suggest limited familiarity with Lucena/Philidor setups. Ten minutes of end-game drills a day will pay off quickly.
Opening homework for the week
| Colour | Focus | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| White | Add a line vs the Queen’s Indian (4.g3 5.Bg2) | Prevents the …Bc5+ tactic that hurt you in the E18 loss. |
| Black | Revisit King’s Indian move-orders – delay …h5 until White has played h3. | Keeps the g-file closed and your king safer. |
Key tactical motif to study
The zwischenzug zwischenzug. You missed 34…Qh2+! in the brhath game – a classic in-between move that would have traded queens and held the draw.
Replay & reflect
Go through your cleanest win once without an engine, explaining every move aloud, then engine-check it. Here is the PGN:
Next steps
- Play three sparring games from move 14 of your first loss to Jerome, defending the position with Black.
- After every session note one critical mistake and one highlight – the “mistake-check-annotate” cycle.
- Email me one annotated loss before our next call so we can dive deeper.
Keep sharpening your tactics and tightening your defence – that combination will take you past 2700 blitz. Good luck!
