Coach Chesswick
Hi Hanri, great to see your constant progress!
👍 Strengths you can keep building on
- Sharp tactical eye. Your recent miniature against downtown0 (ending with ) shows you spot mating motifs quickly.
- Initiative with White. Consistent use of 1.e4 followed by early piece activity gives you promising attacking chances.
- Practical speed. Many wins come from opponents falling behind on the clock – evidence that you can play fast when the position is familiar.
🔍 Main improvement areas
-
King safety in the Sicilian as Black.
In the loss to jyuste64 you entered a queen-less middlegame with the king stuck on d8 after 10…Kxd8. That position is playable, but only if the minor pieces coordinate perfectly. • Memorise a safer Najdorf/Dragon line or try the Classical Sicilian (…e6, …d6, …Be7, short castle) to keep your king behind pawns. • When unsure, remember the rule of thumb: castle before you open the centre. -
Endgame conversion & defence.
In several losses the game reached a rook or rook-plus-minor ending where outside passed pawns decided the result. Work on basic rook endings (Lucena, Philidor) and king-and-pawn technique – these positions appear often once the fireworks are over. -
Pawn-structure awareness.
Pawn breaks like …f6/…g5 in your Sicilian games often weaken dark squares around your king. Instead, look for improving moves that keep the structure intact (…Re8, …Qc7, …a6, …b5 etc.). Think “Do my pawns create holes I can’t cover?” before pushing. -
Time-management balance.
A few games were lost on time when the position was still playable. Use a simple routine: spend extra time only at critical moments (tactics, recaptures, endgame transitions) and rely on quick “safe” moves elsewhere. Try playing some 10 | 0 games to practise deeper calculation without severe clock pressure.
📈 Action plan for the next month
- Opening tune-up: Pick one line vs 1.e4 (e.g. Classical Sicilian or Caro-Kann) and study the first 10 moves plus typical plans. Ten quality games are better than fifty random ones.
- Daily tactics: 20 minutes on mating nets and zwischenzug Zwischenzug problems to keep sharpening your calculation.
- Endgame drills: Play out 15 Lucena/Philidor positions against the engine until you can hold/deliver them in under 30 seconds.
- Review sessions: After each blitz session, pick one win and one loss and annotate them quickly. Focus on the first mistake, not the last one.
Motivation snapshot
Your current peak blitz rating is 1561 (2018-12-09). Let’s aim to add +100 points by combining tighter king safety with stronger endgame play.Keep enjoying the game, Hanri, and remember: every loss is just data for the next improvement cycle. Good luck at the board!
