Hi Josh, here’s a tailored review of your recent games and a roadmap for the next few weeks.

Peak Rapid Rating: 2104 (2023-03-04)  |  Your activity:

 |  “Night-owl” tendency:

What you’re doing well

  • Fighting spirit. Even in worse positions you keep looking for counter-play. The comeback win against benjie1121 (Rossolimo Attack) is a model of perseverance.
  • Active piece play. In your wins you rarely leave pieces passive. Moves like 21. Ne5! in the Rossolimo game or 22. Nc5! in the Ruy Lopez show good appreciation of outposts.
  • Confidence in dynamic pawn breaks. g-pawn storms (e.g. 31.g4!! vs  benjie1121) and pawn levers like f4/f5 create practical problems for opponents.

Recurring issues

  1. Time management.
    • Three of your last five losses were on the clock.
    • Bullet-style “blitzing” in the opening leaves <30 sec for critical middlegame moments.
Action plan: force yourself to stay above 60 seconds until move 15. Verbally say “pause” after each opponent move; you’ll gain 10–15 sec without noticing.
  2. Over-extension with the queen-side pawns.
Loss vs valsoe shows b-pawn grabs (25.Qxd5? … Rcd8!) backfiring.
Drill: After every capture ask: “What has changed? Which file/diagonal opened for my opponent?”
  3. Tactical oversights under pressure.
In the Petroff loss to ca_ysil, 22…Nxe7! exploited your loose back rank.
In the Slav Exchange loss, 18…Bh3! capitalised on undefended dark squares.
Fix: 20-minute daily session on tactics puzzles rated +100 above your current rating; stop after your first error to reinforce discipline.
  4. Endgame conversion.
Win vs dadcore-chessmetal reached a won rook ending yet took 30+ moves to finish. Technique can be cleaner.
Focus: Basic rook endings (Lucena & Philidor) and K+P vs K patterns. A single weekend reviewing endgame fundamentals will save you many minutes later.

Opening tighten-ups (one at a time!)

ColourCurrent choiceKeep / AdjustMicro-goal
White Ruy Lopez / Rossolimo KEEP Add one “ready-answer” vs the Petroff (5.Nc3 lines) so 2…d5 no longer surprises you.
Black vs e4 Caro-Kann & Open Ruy KEEP Memorise only the first 8 moves of the Capablanca line (3…Bf5 4.Nc3 e6 …). Simpler positions, fewer tactics.
Black vs d4 …c5 vs London / Slav hybrids ADJUST Test a rock-solid Queen’s Gambit Declined. Your current early …Qb6 gets punished when you’re low on time.

Annotated snapshot

Key moment – converting the exchange vs ABCdefg1313

Black’s 30…Rc7 iced the a-pawn and kept the b2–rook active. Good technique—remember this structure.

Weekly training menu (4 hrs total)

  • 90 min: Tactical drills (theme: overloaded pieces & discovered attacks).
  • 45 min: Endgame flashcards (K+P, Lucena, Philidor).
  • 45 min: Play two 15 + 10 training games; annotate without engine, then verify.
  • 30 min: Update opening file – one new Petroff line + one London antidote.
  • 30 min: Review mistakes in a calm setting; create a “no-repeat” list.

Final thought

Your tactical eye and willingness to take initiative are clear strengths. Marry that with steadier clock usage and a tighter structure, and 1900-rapid is realistic within three months.

Good luck, and enjoy the climb! – Coach
