General opening rules:
- Put two pawns in the centre (e & d or e & c).
- Develop knights before bishops.
- Castle by move 8-10.
- Don’t move the same piece (especially the queen) twice in the opening unless you win something substantial.

As White: Try the Italian Game – it follows all four rules and still lets you attack.
