Chess_needs_an_uupdate: A Blitz Biography

Meet the Player

Chess_needs_an_uupdate hit the online chess scene in September 2024 with a name that is half mission statement, half cry for help. Chess needs an update, the name insists. The extra U in uupdate suggests the update itself also needs an update, and possibly a proofreader.

Since then the account has stacked up more than 9,400 blitz games, nearly 1,900 rapid games, and over 950 bullet games. Daily chess received exactly one attempt, one loss, and a full retirement. That is not a hobby. That is a residency.

The Great Blitz Climb

The journey started around 2146, slid to 1874 during a cozy January 2025 slump, and then answered every setback with the same strategy: play more chess. March 2025 alone featured 487 blitz games. June brought 666. By December 2025 the climb reached the 2500s, a February 2026 dip was treated as a clerical error, and by October 2026 the peak hit 2659 (2026-10-07).

For good measure, the bullet peak of 2764 (2026-07-26) actually outpaces the blitz peak, proving that when the clock gets shorter, this player gets sharper.

The Repertoire

Roughly a quarter of all games open with 1.Nf3, walking straight into the Hungarian Opening and its magnificently named Wiedenhagen-Beta Gambit, the most played opening in the collection at 280 blitz games. Meanwhile, 1.e4 appears in about six percent of games and is handled like suspicious mail.

With White, the rotation runs through the London Poisoned Pawn Variation, the King's Indian Attack French Variation (the healthiest win rate at 48.7 percent), and the Colle Rhamphorhynchus Variation, which sounds less like an opening and more like a pterosaur with a pension plan.

As Black, the Caro-Kann Defense is the workhorse, the Grünfeld Exchange Variation is the long-term project that keeps refusing to cooperate at a 38 percent win rate, and the Döry Defense quietly posts a respectable 47 percent, presumably because opponents cannot figure out what it is either.

Nemeses and Regulars

Thousands of games means a full contact list of rivals, and it comes with drama:

  • suz99 is the certified nemesis: 43 games, 28 losses, and apparently no plans to stop booking rematches.
  • Cristian Luconi has won 21 of 36 meetings, making this the sequel nobody asked for.
  • Trainingbg81 is the most frequent dance partner at 52 games and a 21-28-3 record, pure competitive chaos.
  • Jorge A González Rodríguez is the good news story: 25 wins against only 15 losses.
  • swop1107 has shown up 47 times and keeps politely shaking hands, including 9 draws.

Style Notes and Confessions

The average win takes 76 moves and the endgame arrives in 78 percent of games, so this is grind-it-out chess, not highlight-reel sacrifices. The comeback rate of 85.8 percent means a lost position is treated as a friendly suggestion, and the one-sided loss rate is under one percent, so getting flattened is rare enough to file a report about.

More than 29,000 checks have been delivered along the way. The queen leads all time with over 10,000, though the rooks staged a 2026 coup and briefly seized the crown. When the opponent checks first, the win rate drops to 37 percent, so opponents are kindly asked not to do that.

The best hour of the day is 4 a.m., with a 54.5 percent win rate, which says a lot about sleep schedules and nothing good. There is a 20 game winning streak on record, balanced by a 14 game losing streak kept around for humility. A third of lost games end in an early, dignified surrender, yet 1,283 wins on time suggest the flag race is very much part of the plan. And the tilt factor is a zen 14 out of 100, which is honestly the most suspicious statistic on this page.

Fast Facts

  • Blitz record: 4,178 wins, 4,510 losses, 756 draws, achieved entirely through volume.
  • Wins 68 percent of games against lower rated opponents and 28 percent against higher rated ones. The matchmaking algorithm has never been fooled once.
  • Longest win streak: 20 games.
  • Most common checking piece, all time: the queen.
  • Daily chess record: 0 wins, 1 loss, instant retirement.

Chess may still need an update. Until it ships, Chess_needs_an_uupdate will be online at 4 a.m., flagging somebody in bullet, and calling it maintenance.
