Adam (chessguy1515): The Marathon Man of Blitz Chess
Few players in online chess embody the word "grinder" like Adam, better known by his username chessguy1515. Since first logging on in October 2016, he has played more than 21,000 games, the overwhelming majority at his preferred time control of Blitz, where he has stacked up over 12,500 games and counting. Adam is not a fireworks tactician hunting brilliancies in twenty moves. He is a slow tide, and you are the beach.
The Eight-Year Climb
Adam's first Blitz rating in late 2016 began at a number best described as "room for growth," and the early months were a crash course in humility. He did not rage quit or reinvent himself. He simply kept clicking. By October 2024, a two-game cameo after a long blitz hiatus produced a new career best of 1900 (2024-10-07), and that December he reached 2006 (2024-12-09) in Rapid on the strength of a single game, possibly the most efficient peak in online chess history. Bullet chess has its own legend: in January 2023 he played 661 Bullet games in one month, roughly 21 per day, and rocketed from 1041 to 1700. His mouse has reportedly never fully recovered.
The Chess Openings Repertoire: Kangaroos and Cobras
With White, Adam opened with 1.e4 as a beginner, flirted with the English in 2017, then swore permanent allegiance to 1.d4. His signature is the cheeky Australian Defense, an opening named after a continent and scored above 60 percent across more than 500 bullet games. His bankable mainline is the Queen's Gambit Declined with an early bishop sortie, met by 3.cxd5, which he converts at a 62.5 percent clip in bullet. On the black side he is a devoted Sicilian Defense player who loves the Closed and Anti-Sveshnikov structures, though the Alapin Variation remains his personal Kryptonite. Ambush attempts with the Amar Gambit and the Barnes Opening have mostly failed to rattle him.
The Australian Defense in action: a French that walks straight into a center punch.
The money line: bishop out early, Adam takes the center trade, and the structure bends his way.
Style: The Endgame Grinder Who Never Says Die
Adam's profile is a grinder's profile. Nearly two thirds of his games (62.75 percent) reach an endgame, his wins average about 65 moves while his losses limp home at 59, and his early resignation rate is a minuscule 2 percent. Dropping a piece is an inconvenience, not a verdict: his comeback rate sits at 80.7 percent, and he still wins nearly half of the games in which he has lost material. He also owns a rare double crown as an executioner: around 2,700 victims by checkmate and more than 3,000 by flag fall, because in Adam's world the clock counts as a second attacking piece.
- Longest win streak: 16 games, a genuine heater.
- Longest losing streak: 12 games, the price of never backing down.
- Favorite checking piece: the queen, with over 17,700 checks and counting. The rooks (more than 14,700 checks) have filed a formal complaint about favoritism.
- Lands the first check almost half the time and wins 59 percent of those games.
- Only about 4 percent of his losses are one-sided, so even the defeats are competitive.
- White scores 52.81 percent, Black 47.34 percent, which tracks with a man who treats the first move as a personal entitlement.
- Tilt factor: a serene 12. Bad beats bounce off him like stray bullets.
Nemeses, Victims, and the Lunchtime Curse
Adam's most frequent opponent is luisdgarcia, with 40 games fought to a near dead heat at 20 wins against 17 losses, the online equivalent of a house sparring partner. Then there is raj22pec, who leads their head to head 17 to 9 and has clearly studied the film, and sanwu, who holds a similar 13 to 7 edge. On the other side of the ledger sits user8543, Adam's favorite victim at 14 wins against a single loss. Time of day matters too: Adam is a mid-morning predator with a 56.6 percent win rate at 10 AM, but his game collapses to roughly 37 percent at lunchtime, so challenge him at noon at your own peril. Fittingly for a grinder, he plays even better when something is on the line, winning about 23 percentage points more in rated games than in casual ones.
Fun Facts
- Daily chess record: 10 wins, 1 loss. He plays correspondence chess about once a geological era and apparently never loses track of a position.
- Against lower-rated opposition he wins 63.5 percent of the time; against higher-rated players the number dips, which he considers a design flaw of the rating system.
- Most common first move across his career: 1.d4, with 1.e4 making a nostalgic comeback in 2025.
- Average first capture: move 6.5, proving he is happy to let you strike first and then bill you for it.
- His 2025 games run shorter than his classics, suggesting the grinder may finally be learning that games do not have to be marathons.
