Bibek Gurung (ChesswithMrBill): Online Chess Biography
Meet Mr. Bill
Somewhere out there, most likely around 3 AM, Bibek Gurung is clicking a chess clock. The online chess world knows him as ChesswithMrBill, a signature he has been stamping on games since February 2018. In that time he has piled up north of 29,000 games: more than 20,000 in blitz, over 6,600 in rapid, thousands in bullet, and a suspiciously tidy little handful of Daily games.
If the username nods to a certain accident-prone claymation character, it fits. Things collapse, disasters pile up, and somehow Mr. Bill is fine by morning. His longest losing streak is 13 games. His response was a 19-game winning streak and roughly 14,000 career wins.
The Daily Chess Menace
Bibek's preferred time control is Daily chess, where a move can take a day and Mr. Bill turns into a final boss. The record speaks: 16 wins, 3 losses, 2 draws, a win rate of about 76% in a format where everyone has all the time in the world.
It started humbly at 341 in January 2023, then climbed like it was late for a meeting. By July 2026 one decisive victory sealed a peak of 2212 (2026-07-09). Give this man a day per move and he becomes mostly unavoidable.
The Rapid Rocket
Rapid is the main event of this biography. After a quiet debut in July 2021, Bibek detonated in November 2024 by playing 1,760 rapid games in a single month, then added 1,299 more in December. The grind carried him to a peak of 2300 (2026-03-05) on March 5, 2026, along with about 3,400 rapid wins, most of them the slow, patient kind.
Bird Watching: The Opening Repertoire
Every grinder has a signature, and Bibek's has feathers. The Bird Opening, 1.f4, is his white staple: he played it 1,696 times in 2025 alone. The Bird's Dutch Variation setup wins near 58% as White in bullet and rapid, and he mirrors the idea as Black with the Dutch Defense, also north of 54% in bullet.
A textbook Mr. Bill setup:
Then come the plot twists: the Scandinavian Defense (1,201 blitz games), the Caro-Kann Defense (827 in blitz), the Amar Gambit and its cheerful 1.Nh3, the Australian Defense, and the Amazon Attack, whose Siberian branch has frozen him at a 43.7% win rate. He has also logged 52 games of the London (REDACTED) Poisoned Pawn Variation, an opening so dangerous its name is partially classified. Meanwhile, the Blackburne Shilling Gambit has ambushed him 75 times as White, which is 75 more encounters than any opening coach would prescribe.
Nemesis Watch
With that volume comes a supporting cast of rivals:
- Megatower2025: 150 games, the marathon rivalry of the era. Bibek leads 88-56-6.
- hetailoverbou: 143 games, with a winning record of 89-46-8.
- ashishbhai18062: 41 games at 28-8-5, statistically his favorite opponent.
- pawan_awasthi: 90 games and a grim 26-56-8. A certified nemesis.
- tactics917: 63 games at 14-48-1. The final boss of the final bosses.
Every hero has kryptonite. Bibek apparently stocks an entire pharmacy.
The 3 AM Grindmaster
The style is unmistakable: long games, no panic. About 75% of his games reach an endgame, his average win lasts around 69 moves, and the trackers log a comeback rate of 85.26%. Even after dropping a whole piece he still wins roughly 47% of the time, and he resigns early just 1.15% of the time, meaning opponents must actually finish the job. His tilt factor reads 13 out of 100, which in chess terms is basically a meditation retreat.
He wins on time far more than he loses on time (3,170 to 1,613), has delivered 3,118 checkmates, and favors the queen for checking duties with 28,924 royal courtesy calls. Ninety-four games ended in stalemate, which is either mercy or masochism. His best hour is 3 AM at a 53.7% win rate, his worst is 11 PM, and Saturday is when everything clicks.

The Bottom Line
Bibek Gurung is proof that chess improvement is mostly stubbornness with a board. Whether it is a Bird blitz at midnight, a bullet storm at 3 AM, or a Daily game pondered over breakfast for a week, Mr. Bill shows up, plays on, and dares the position to collapse. It often does. He comes back anyway.
