Meet Coach Carlos
Coach Carlos, known on the board as CoachCarlos, has been a fixture in online chess queues since 2013. With nearly 3,000 games to his name, he has lived through slow grinds, bullet fireworks, and one very memorable 0-50 rivalry.
His favorite playground may be bullet chess, but his success is not a sprint. He owns a peak bullet rating of 1946 (2022-10-11) and a rapid peak of 1916 (2021-11-23), making him dangerous at more than one speed.
From Grinder to Glow-Up
The early years were tough. In 2013 Coach Carlos opened near the 1300s in blitz, then spent years wandering through the 1000s. He kept playing, kept learning, and kept losing enough to build a very thick skin.
Then came the late 2021 spark. In a few short months, he turned a 1104 blitz rating into a peak blitz rating of 1959 (2022-08-19). That kind of jump does not happen by accident. It comes from long games, long losing streaks, and the stubborn refusal to stop. His longest losing streak was 11 games. His longest winning streak was 23. The second number matters a lot more.
Opening Repertoire
Ask Coach Carlos what he wants to play and the answer usually starts with 1.e4. He has deep experience in the Scotch Game, where his blitz win rate is a strong 64.71%. When he is not playing the Scotch, he often meets 1.e4 with the Scandinavian Defense, which he has turned into a 69.39% weapon in bullet chess. He also enjoys the chaos of the Sicilian Defense when the mood calls for something sharper.
A familiar starting point for his Scotch adventures:
Style and Grit
Coach Carlos is not a quick resigner. Only 1.8% of his games end in early resignation, and his average wins run about 54 moves. He grinds, he checks, and he hunts. He delivers the first check in 54% of his games, and when he does, his win rate jumps to 61.5%.
- Comeback rate: 81%. He always believes there is a way back.
- Win rate after losing a piece: 49.8%. Even down material, he stays dangerous.
- One-sided loss rate: 3.1%. Even his losses are usually fights.
His best time of day is 10:00 AM, when his win rate is a scary 90%. If you meet him then, just enjoy the lesson.
The Rivalry That Won't Quit
Every chess journey needs a nemesis. For Coach Carlos, that nemesis is Guillermo Baches Garcia. The two players have faced off 50 times, and Coach Carlos is still searching for his first win. Fifty losses, zero wins, and he keeps clicking play. That is either incredible persistence or very specific taste in sparring partners.
Whatever the reason, the same resilience defines his career. He may lose battles, but he always keeps building toward the next winning streak.
Still Coaching
Coach Carlos does not need a certificate to teach a masterclass in improvement. He started as a 1000-level scrapper and turned himself into a player with a bullet peak of 1946 (2022-10-11) and a blitz peak of 1959 (2022-08-19). In a game that punishes impatience, he kept showing up.
If you see CoachCarlos in the bullet queue, sit down, buckle up, and remember: at 10 in the morning, you are probably playing from behind.
