Coach Chesswick
Hey CosmicBoss101, here’s a quick performance debrief
What you are doing well
- Consistent opening repertoire. As Black you rely on the French Exchange and score well with the …Bd6/…Ne7 setup. As White you handle closed pawn structures (d4-c4 and Benko positions) confidently.
- Activity over material. In several wins you gave back pawns (e.g. against mile66) to seize open lines and keep the initiative—a good practical approach in 3-minute games.
- Conversion technique. Games vs. @YouCanTryAgain and @carlos_sogal show that once you reach a clearly better endgame you convert smoothly without letting the advantage slip.
Recurrent difficulties
- Pawn storms that over-extend. The loss vs. @julio-ara-ve followed
f4-f5too early, weakening e- and g-files. Similar story in the Nimzo loss where 25.h3 created dark-square holes just before …Nf4!. Adopt a simple check-list: “Is my king safer than his? Do I control the square I leave behind?” - Tactical vision vs. exposed king. Many miniatures end with …Qg2# or …Qxg2# motifs. Blunder rate will drop if you:
- Spend 15 min daily on “mate-in-2” puzzles.
- During the game, add one extra scan for queen/rook battery on the long diagonal and back rank before each pawn move near your king.
- Time management. Two of your recent losses (vs. akashbhateja, vs. andreigronivo) came from flagging or big drops between moves 10-20. Play a streak of 10 bullet games on increment focusing only on
move instantly with a plan
. The goal is to learn to trust your first candidate move.
Position you should analyse deeply
Black’s last two moves are thematic: …Nf4 (clear a path) and …Qg2#. Add this pattern to your “danger zone” memory bank.
Action plan for the next 2 weeks
- Tactics: 75 puzzles/day on Chess.com’s custom set “queen & knight mates” + “back-rank tricks”. Aim for 90 % accuracy under 30 seconds each.
- Opening tune-up: In the French Exchange start mixing the dynamic line 4…c5 instead of 4…c6 to practise playing with an isolated pawn; this will broaden your middlegame patterns.
- Endgame drill: Play 20 rook-vs-rook endings with table-base guidance; many of your French structures transition to this endgame.
- Blitz with increment: 3 + 2 only. Stop after any game where your clock drops below 20 sec before move 25 and analyse why.
