Darknight865: Night Shift Chess, Done Properly

Most chess players wait for morning coffee. Darknight865 waits for everyone else to fall asleep. Active since June 2020 and happiest in the small hours, this blitz-first online chess player has logged roughly 3,400 games, climbing from a humble 1396 all the way past 2600 at the peak, all while answering to a username that sounds like a superhero whose origin story involves a missed alarm. The best hour of the day, by results, is 3:00 AM. Naturally.

The Long Ascent Through the Dark

The climb was steady, stubborn and occasionally dramatic. Eighteen blitz games in June 2020 started things off. By August 2021 the rating had cracked 1800, January 2022 brought 2100, and late 2023 touched 2200. Then came the 2026 surge of serious volume, including 242 games in September alone, which ended with the peak stamped at 2614. The bullet board tells a similar tale, topping out at 2616 in February 2026, because why sleep when there are flags to collect?

The streak history reads like a soap opera: 21 straight wins at high tide, and 13 straight losses during what shall henceforth be known as the Long Dark Night of the Soul. The bounce back afterwards was, predictably, very dark knight.

The Repertoire: Walls, Traps and One Suspicious Gambit

The calling card is the Caro-Kann Defense: 237 blitz games and another 280 in bullet, a defensive wall assembled one stubborn brick per move. With the white pieces, the Sicilian Defense becomes the main battleground, featuring regular appointments at the Sicilian Defense: Najdorf Variation and a genuine fondness for the Closed Kharlov-Kramnik Line, where 51 blitz games produced a win rate just under 65%.

Then there is the shadowy side of the repertoire. The Blackburne Shilling Gambit has crossed the board 61 times in blitz with a winning score, and in bullet the Amar Gambit appears 136 times at a 58% clip. The strategic idea is simple: play something odd and hope the opponent is also awake at 4 AM. Visitors who tried the Amazon Attack were sent home losing slightly more often than they won.

Style: The Comeback Machine

  • Endgame citizens: over 81% of games reach the endgame, and wins average about 78 moves. Patience, not pyrotechnics.
  • The early resignation rate is 1.81%, meaning almost never. Even after dropping a piece, the win rate stays near 47%.
  • 544 victories by timeout. The flag is not a bug here, it is a feature, and it gets collected regularly.
  • Balance reminder: 861 losses on time as well. The clock giveth, and the clock taketh away.
  • The checkmate ledger sits at 366 delivered and 363 received. Beautifully symmetrical violence.
  • The Slav Defense is the one wall that keeps collapsing on them, with roughly a 32% blitz score. Nobody is perfect at 3 AM.

The Rogues Gallery

Every dark legend needs recurring villains. Roman Akopov is the Joker of this saga: eight meetings, zero wins, seven losses and one draw, a stat line that deserves its own museum wing. Baki is the most frequent foe at 18 games, leading the series 12-6. GrandZugzwang narrowly leads ten meetings by a 5-4-1 margin, and somehow the zugzwangs were still rare. For lighter news, Eduardo Ortiz has been tagged 6-2, and JAO_2905 keeps the peace at 5-1-3, the diplomat of the group.

Tales from the Dark Side

  • Win rate at 3 AM: 100%. Sample size undisclosed, like most things that happen at 3 AM.
  • Worst hours: 3 PM (36%) and 9 PM (38%). Chess before dinner is bad. Chess after dinner is apparently worse.
  • Strongest weekday: Tuesday at 52%. Weakest: Thursday. The weekend is for resting the dark powers.
  • 2023 featured a brief b-pawn rebellion, with the Nimzo-Larsen Attack opened in 19 of 26 white games that year.
  • Tilt factor: 13 out of 100. Cooler than the far side of the pillow.
  • Rated games outperform casual ones by 49 points of win rate. Friendly games are apparently for people who sleep.
  • 18 career stalemates: some nights simply refuse to end.

The verdict? Darknight865 is a grinder, a flag hunter, a comeback artist and a Caro-Kann loyalist who peaked in September 2026 and shows no sign of turning the lights on. The night shift continues.
