Dean Hogg (deano70): The Reluctant Blitz Legend

Dean Hogg, known to the leaderboard as deano70, is living proof that chess improvement is not a sprint, it is a siege. His profile lists Daily chess as his preferred time control, and in that format he is genuinely perfect: six wins, zero losses, one draw. The catch? He has played exactly seven Daily games. The other 31,000-odd games of his career arrived with much faster clocks, which suggests Dean's true preferred time control is simply "whatever starts next."

A Career in Two Acts

Act One: in 2012, Dean burst onto the blitz scene, won his first five games, and then vanished like a magician who refuses to explain the trick. Act Two: he resurfaced in 2017, got truly serious in 2020, and spent the following years grinding out an epic climb, including a 320-game rapid marathon in October 2023 alone. By February 2026 the climb was complete, with a peak rapid rating of 2401 (2026-02-19) and a blitz peak of 2343 (2026-02-17), both set within days of each other. Watch the ascent here:

The Grinder's Style

Dean is an endgame creature. Roughly 86% of his games reach an endgame, his average win stretches past 72 moves, and even his losses take about 93 moves to happen, which is less a defeat and more a long hostage negotiation. He waits until around move eight to capture anything, because patience is a weapon. When it is time to apply pressure, he leads with the big pieces: more than 34,000 rook checks and counting make the rook his favorite way of saying hello.

  • Comeback rate: 86%. You must beat Dean twice, once to knock him down and once to keep him there.
  • Win rate even after dropping a piece: 46%. Handicaps are apparently optional.
  • Tilt factor: 14 out of 100. Cooler than the other side of the pillow.
  • Most productive hour: 2:00 AM, where the win rate climbs to 56%. Other players drink coffee. Dean runs on moonlight.
  • When Dean loses, it is usually the clock that finishes the job. He has lost nearly 8,900 games on time versus about 2,600 by resignation. Dean does not resign. Dean waits.

The Opening Cupboard

Dean's repertoire is less a collection of openings and more a set of recurring characters. As Black, the Czech Defense is his security blanket, with well over 1,300 blitz games spent building the same stubborn pawn chain. His Sicilian Defense is the sharpest tool in the shed, scoring 67% in rapid and north of 70% with the black pieces. The Modern Defense shows up too, occasionally upgraded to full Pterodactyl mode.

As White, Dean favors the London System laced with Poisoned Pawn ambitions, plus more than 1,000 blitz games of the Amazon Attack, Siberian branch, an opening named after two cold places for maximum menace.

A taste of the Czech wall that has absorbed thousands of opponents:

Rivals and Frequent Foes

Every grinder needs a nemesis, and Dean has Kantemir-08: 96 meetings and Dean still trails the series 39-50-7. At this point it is less a rivalry and more a subscription. Imre varasdy has faced him 78 times and actually trails 31-41, one of the few humans Dean can claim ownership of. Then there is chocolate dark, the bogeyman of the collection: 54 games, and Dean has cracked that code only 19 times. Chess has rivalries. Dean has a recurring cast.

Dean Hogg by the Numbers

  • 31,000+ games played and still sharpening the saw.
  • 13,727 blitz wins out of more than 28,000 blitz games. Quantity has a quality all its own.
  • Best winning streak: 13 games. Worst losing streak: 14 games. Cosmic balance achieved.
  • Lifetime Daily record: 6-0-1. Technically undefeated, technically untested, entirely unbothered.
  • 4,253 wins by timeout. Patience, it turns out, is a scoring technique.
  • 2,110 wins by checkmate, delivered in style, usually by a rook.

The Bottom Line

Dean Hogg is the kind of opponent who turns a casual game into a full-length feature film. He does not beat you quickly, he beats you thoroughly, preferably around 2 AM, preferably with a rook check you never saw coming. Want to test the Czech wall or welcome him to the 2400 club properly? Challenge deano70, then clear your evening. Or your week. It is Daily chess, after all.
