DerFriedberger: The Frying Pan of Bullet Chess

Meet the Man

There are bullet chess players, and then there is DerFriedberger, a speed demon whose own name contains the word "fried", which is roughly what happens to an opponent's brain around move 20 with three seconds left on the clock. In barely half a year of recorded online chess, DerFriedberger has packed in 1,047 games, climbed past 2500 in bullet, and established a reputation as a certified clock-wrecking machine.

While bullet chess is clearly the home turf, healthy doses of blitz and rapid suggest a well-rounded diet. The numbers still tell one story: hand DerFriedberger a board and a tiny clock, and things get dangerous fast.

The Opening Kitchen

As White, it is 1. e4, 469 times and counting, with a rebellious 20 games of 1. Nc3 and 15 audacious 1. h4 openers for the purists to cry about.

The main course from the white side is the Sicilian Defense: Closed, a workhorse with a 60% plus win rate across formats. For special occasions there is the Vienna Gambit in its Max Lange variety, winning nearly 79% of bullet games, plus the Amar Gambit, reportedly christened by Tartakower as "Absolutely Mad And Ridiculous". DerFriedberger plays it anyway, and wins over half the time, which is honestly the most on-brand thing imaginable.

As Black, the Caro-Kann Defense is the daily bread, backed up by the Scandinavian and Alekhine. Then there is the Barnes Defense, aka 1. e4 f6, objectively one of the worst first moves in chess, which DerFriedberger somehow wields to a 64% bullet win rate. Do not try this at home. Or do. The Friedberger clearly did, and got away with it.

Every kitchen has burnt dishes: the Blackburne Shilling Gambit sits at 0 for 5 in blitz, and the French Exchange as White in blitz wins a frosty 18%. Burn those recipes.

Rivals, Grudges and One Designated Victim

Every great player has a foil. slsch06 is not that foil; slsch06 is more of a speed bag, meeting DerFriedberger 42 times and escaping with just 2 wins against 38 losses. Somebody should check on them.

The true nemesis answers to yoni grabinsky, who leads their head to head a menacing 8 to 2 across ten games. Either johnny_1983 has studied the tape or simply enjoys collecting Friedberger scalps. Meanwhile, gibby1321 went 0 for 4 and is probably owed an apology.

Style: Queen First, Questions Never

The statistics read like a thriller. The most common checking piece is the queen, deployed 1,113 times, and DerFriedberger checks first 54% of the time, converting those games at a 59% win rate. When that queen starts hovering, duck.

  • An 84.7% comeback rate: being down a piece is a suggestion, not a verdict, and over half the time a piece drops, DerFriedberger wins anyway.
  • Endgames appear in 76% of games and wins average 74 moves. A grinderp, not a sprinter, which is deeply funny in a bullet player.
  • 186 wins by timeout against only 53 losses on the clock. The flag is mightier than the sword.
  • Roughly 74% of defeats end in a quick resignation. When the position is truly dead, DerFriedberger does not linger over the corpse.
  • A serene tilt factor of 7. A 17 game winning streak proves it, and a current 6 game skid suggests the streak gods are testing that serenity.

The September Surge

September 2026 was the month of the Friedberger: roughly 380 bullet games, 209 wins, a monthly average soaring past 2400, and a career high bullet rating on September 24. Blitz touched 2374 and rapid 2277 that same month, meaning for a few glorious weeks every clock in the building was in danger.

By the Numbers

  • Peak bullet rating: 2509 (2026-09-24), set on September 24, 2026.
  • Unbeaten in daily chess. Sample size: one. Undefeated is undefeated.
  • Best hour: 16:00, an 81.5% win rate. Worst hours: 23:00 and 01:00. The late night bullet lobby knows.
  • Thursdays are the strongest weekday at 61.4%; Saturdays, ironically, are for losing slightly more than winning.
  • Average first capture: move 6. Diplomacy does not last long around here.
  • Against higher rated opposition the record turns grim at about 30% wins; versus lower rated foes it is a friendly 67%. Pick your poison accordingly.

Final Verdict

DerFriedberger is a bullet-first brawler with a closed Sicilian as the house specialty, a Caro-Kann as the shield, a queen that checks more often than a doorbell, and a comeback rate that makes losing feel like a temporary administrative error. If the challenge screen says DerFriedberger, book the match for 16:00 or not at all, and whatever you do, do not let it reach move 75.
