Some players win beautifully. EvanCapel wins thoroughly. Since first appearing on the blitz board in November 2012 as a modest 1323-rated newcomer, EvanCapel has racked up more than 8,000 rated games, powered a blitz rating to a peak of 2576 (2025-06-21), and turned the Scandinavian Defense into a personal calling card. The very first game was a win, a standard that has been only about 53% respected ever since.
The Speedrun and the Marathon
The origin story reads like a video game speedrun. One game in November 2012, one win, rating 1323. Two months later, after roughly 60 games, the number had swollen past 2,100. That is an 800-point climb in about six weeks, the chess equivalent of learning to swim by crossing a channel.
Then came the marathon. In May 2014 alone, EvanCapel played 620 blitz games, twenty a day, every day, no days off. The 2,200s fell in 2013, the 2,400s by 2016, and 2,500 was first conquered in late 2018. Growth by attrition, with a decade of receipts.
How EvanCapel Wins
There is no tactic party here. An endgame appears in nearly 79% of games, the average win stretches across almost 80 moves, and the comeback rate sits at a giddy 87.59%. Even after dropping a whole piece, EvanCapel still wins more than half the time, which says less about luck and more about a predator's patience.
Defeats are correspondingly tidy. One-sided losses happen in just 1.35% of games, and draws are almost mythical, only 283 across more than 5,000 blitz games. Meanwhile, 1,521 career wins arrived by flag, proof that if you drift on move 30, EvanCapel will happily out-wait your calendar.
The Repertoire
As Black, it is the Scandinavian, then more Scandinavian: nearly 800 blitz games in the Scandinavian Defense, a line so reliable it deserves its own parking spot.
As White, the menu turns eccentric. There is the Colle Rhamphorhynchus Variation, a name that sounds like a pterodactyl and bites like one at over 53%, the London Poisoned Pawn Variation around 54%, and the sprightly Amar Gambit. One genuine leak exists: the Benko Gambit, attempted 271 times with a win rate south of 41% and 136 losses. At some point, a pawn sacrifice and EvanCapel simply have to stop meeting like this.
Nemeses and Repeat Customers
- ImbaSpirit: 387 meetings, the defining rivalry of the account, with EvanCapel holding a 223-152-12 edge.
- Brendan Mak: 156 games, 142 wins, 9 losses. At some point this stopped being a rivalry and became a subscription service.
- MindCoach: 125 games, and despite the coaching credentials the record runs 34-85 against EvanCapel. Perhaps the mind was coached elsewhere.
- fys100: 206 games, 124 wins. A loyal sparring partner in the truest sense of the word.
Rituals and Superstitions
Know the clock before you challenge. The 19:00 hour produces a menacing 66.67% win rate, while 17:00 has yielded a catastrophic 20%. Saturdays bring the best chess at 58%, Wednesdays the worst. Add a nearly 19-point swing between casual and rated results, and a 28-game winning streak on the resume, and the picture is complete: EvanCapel is never more dangerous than when absolutely nothing is at stake, and never more relentless than when the flag is ticking.
The Legacy
With a peak bullet rating above 2,500 as well, and a playing style best described as patient tide, EvanCapel stands among the great quiet grinders of online blitz. Rarely flashy, always present, and statistically very likely to be winning the endgame of your next defeat on move 79.
