Filip Klim: The Candidate Master Who Never Resigns
Filip Klim, known on the scoreboard as FilipKlim, is a FIDE Candidate Master whose blitz chess career is one long "trust the process" montage. In March 2016 he played his first rated blitz game at 1037 and lost. In April he lost again. Nobody in the chess world was put on notice. A decade later he had stacked up 675 blitz wins, earned his Candidate Master title, and pushed his rating to a peak of 2649 (2025-10-24). This biography exists to explain the gap between those two sentences.
The Decade-Long Glow-Up
The early years were character building. By July 2016 the rating had dipped as low as 779, the chess equivalent of hitting every red light on the way to work. But the curve only knew one direction: up, eventually. He cracked 1800 by December 2019, weathered the 2020 grind flirting with 1900, and in November 2022 went a flawless 4-0 in a single sitting to spike past 2100. Then: silence, for almost three years.
He returned in July 2025 like a man who had spent the sabbatical doing exactly one thing: 146 blitz games in one month, 75 wins, and a climb from the low 2200s into the mid-2400s. October 2025 was the masterpiece, 291 games in a single month, nearly ten per day, and a summit in the mid-2600s. Since then he has patrolled the 2500s like a friendly troll under the Candidate Master bridge.
The Opening Menu
Filip's most traveled road is the Sicilian Defense: Najdorf Variation, 70 blitz games and counting. The stats are delightfully contradictory: facing the Najdorf with White he wins about 62% of the time, but driving the Najdorf himself the win rate drops to 34%. The clear lesson is that the Najdorf is only dangerous when his opponent plays it.
Against the Caro-Kann Defense he is a steady 51% as White, and he has an unusual hobby: collecting Blackburne Shilling Gambits. The Blackburne Shilling Gambit is a street trap built around 3...Nd4, where the greedy 4.Nxe5?? runs into Qg5 and sudden disaster. It has appeared in 37 of his blitz games and he still scores over 51% in them, which suggests either elite trap defusal or a suspiciously strong stomach.
Because he is not a coward, he also plays the Amar Gambit (1.Nh3!?) at roughly a coin flip over 29 games. Style points count double.
The bbartekk Saga
Every hero needs a villain, and Filip found his in Bartosz Bartodziej: 89 games, 30 wins, 48 losses, 11 draws. That is not a rivalry, that is a subscription. For diplomatic balance there is stasiek12, a 14-game series split perfectly at 6-6-2, the chess equivalent of a treaty nobody wants to renegotiate.
How He Actually Plays
- Endgame creature: roughly 78% of his games reach an endgame, and his average win lasts 73 moves. His average loss lasts even longer, because the early resignation rate is barely 1%. Filip does not resign, he merely loses later than you would prefer.
- Comeback artist: his comeback rate sits at 82.75%, and even after dropping a piece he still wins 43% of those games. Hang a knight against him and you have started something you may regret.
- Dignified in defeat: a one-sided loss rate of just 1.33%. When he loses, you genuinely earned it.
- Perfectly balanced: longest winning streak, 10 games. Longest losing streak, also 10 games. As all things should be.
- Nearly untiltable: a tilt factor of 10, which in the world of online blitz is practically meditative.
- Morning menace: his win rate peaks at 8 AM (a frankly rude 80%) and sinks near 38% around 8 PM. Friday is his best day, Tuesday his worst. Schedule accordingly.
Fun Facts
- He delivers checkmate in only about 1% of his games. Most opponents resign first or run out of clock (21 timeout wins and counting), which Filip considers a perfectly acceptable delivery method.
- Against higher rated opponents he wins about 26% of the time; against lower rated ones, 66%. In other words, he beats everyone he is supposed to beat, which is rarer than it sounds.
- His first capture typically lands around move 6: he likes to let the position marinate before committing to violence, with the rook as his favorite checking piece.
- For variety he keeps bullet (peak 2212) and rapid (peak 2221) as side dishes, but blitz is clearly the natural habitat.
- Exactly two stalemate draws on record, the chess equivalent of a mutual shrug.
