A Cat With a Chessboard
GM_SzachowyKocur, affectionately known as Kocur, is a chess engine disguised as a Polish tomcat. The username roughly translates to "chess tomcat," and the stats tell a nine-lives story. Kocur has played more than 8,800 rated games, split almost perfectly between wins and losses, and somehow still reached a blitz peak of 2522 (2026-02-02) and a rapid peak of 2232 (2025-05-16). If persistence had a portrait, it would be a cat holding a mouse in one paw and a captured queen in the other.
The Long Claw to the Top
Kocur's march up the blitz ladder is the definition of a grind. After a rocky spring in 2023, when the rating floor felt more familiar than the ceiling, Kocur clawed upward through thousands of three-minute battles. Blitz is the preferred habitat: more than 3,600 games and still counting.
shows a line that goes from "what is a gambit?" to "thank you, next opponent."Openings, E4, and Chaos
Kocur opens with 1.e4 the way cats knock things off tables: constantly and with intent. The Sicilian Defense and Scandinavian Defense appear on both sides of the board with remarkable frequency. Add the Amar Gambit, the Bird Opening: Dutch Variation, Batavo Gambit, and enough Caro-Kann Defense games to fill a zoo, and you have a repertoire that is broad, brave, and occasionally baffling.
For the uninitiated, a typical Kocur blitz game may start like this:
. From there, nobody knows, least of all Kocur's opponents.Friends, Foes, and 34 Losses to Kuba
Every cat has a nemesis. For Kocur, that nemesis is Kuba, against whom the record is an astonishing 0 wins, 34 losses, and 0 draws. It is a head-to-head that deserves its own scientific study. Meanwhile, AZskill has also caused trouble with 43 wins over Kocur, though Kocur did manage 16 wins of revenge. On the friendlier side, banmai8388 has felt the claws: 19 wins against only 2 losses.
The overall competitive record is almost perfectly balanced, but Kocur has found other ways to win: 839 timeout wins against only 130 timeout losses. Running the clock is apparently also a feline skill.
