Mihai-Lucian Grunberg: Blitz's Friendly Neighbourhood International Master
Call him Mihai, call him grunbergmihai, or call him "must be doing the morning drill again" if you catch him online. This International Master has quietly turned online chess into a full-time endurance sport. Across more than 47,000 blitz games, he has absorbed punches, delivered his own, and somehow kept coming back to the board like a man with a score to settle and a clock to do it on.
His kindest surface is Blitz chess, where he has produced not just a career but a small industrial volume of games. He can even claim a 23-game winning streak on one hand and an 11-game losing streak on the other, then calmly explain both in the same interview.
The Blitz Run
When Mihai first logged on with a perfect Roman-empire-vibe 1342 blitz rating, the graph of his career probably looked like a goose trying to take off. By 2026 he was hovering in the upper 2600s and occasionally poking at 2700, so you could say he landed.
Openings That Never Sleep
Grunberg is not a man of quiet comfort zones. He has repeatedly played the Alekhine Defense and Modern Defense as Black, and he will happily spend an afternoon dancing around a Scandinavian Defense. With White he often reaches for the "Batavo Gambit" part of the Bird, and in Daily chess he has a weird, almost unfair 91.3% success in the Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation. Some people win because they know one good thing; Grunberg wins because he knows the name of every weird offshoot the opening book throws.
Rivalry Corner
Most players fear the pairing screen. Grunberg probably sees it as runway. Nobody has been paired more often than Goran Galiot and Mihai Ionescu each with over a hundred meetings. Those matches are less chess, more a telenovela told in 560 no-holds-barred moves.
Night Owl Mode
If the table he shows is the real one, perhaps not the same. His most efficient hours appear to be somewhere around 2 a.m., and 100% of the games played at 4:00 are wins. Brisk. We will not recommend blocking that as the only way to win. What we can recommend: he is a champion of last-minute come-backs, with almost 90% of his losing situations eventually flipped. The timer is long to steal, but the game remains his living room.
