Meet harry-chen

harry-chen is an online chess player whose record reads like a rounding error in someone's favour. The account opened in November 2019 with a modest 795 in blitz and a flat 800 in rapid, played a handful of games, then went quiet for nearly three years. When harry-chen returned in July 2022, something clicked: the rapid rating climbed from 963 to 2195 inside a single month, and the games have not really slowed down since.

Since that burst, harry-chen has piled up more than 900 bullet wins, over 350 in blitz, and a rapid record of 141 wins, 13 losses and 18 draws. That rapid percentage is the sort of number that makes opponents check whether the account is a titled player's smurf, a very good engine, or simply someone who has solved the position and refuses to share the solution.

The d4 Devotion: Opening Repertoire

Ask harry-chen for a first move and the answer is d4 with the enthusiasm of someone who has never considered a second option. In 2022 the tally was 837 games starting 1.d4 against 8 with 1.Nf3, 3 with 1.c4 and 3 with 1.e4. The London System and Queen's Gambit structures are home turf, and the Queen's Gambit Declined shows up again and again on both sides of the board.

The pet lines are where things get strange. The Australian Defense has appeared 108 times in bullet, delivering a 62 percent win rate, which is remarkable for an opening most club players would need a search engine to identify. The Amazon Attack, including the Siberian Attack branch, is close to unbeatable in rapid: 11 wins from 11 games, plus 71 percent in blitz. The Sicilian Defense does most of the work as Black, backed up by the Semi-Slav and the occasional Nimzo-Indian Defense in classical mode, where the record is a cool 11 wins from 13 blitz games.

Playing Style: Long Games, Late Resignations

harry-chen does not win quickly and does not lose quickly. Eight out of ten games reach an endgame, wins average about 72 moves, and losses take slightly longer than the victories, which suggests a stubbornness that borders on spiritual. The comeback rate of 83.6 percent is the headline stat: sacrifice a piece, give up the exchange, and harry-chen is still the favourite. The one-sided loss rate sits under 2 percent, meaning genuine blowouts are rare enough to count on one hand.

Early resignations are almost unheard of. harry-chen will play on in a hopeless position, waiting for one loose rook, one careless check, one last trap. It is not pretty, but it works. Of the roughly thousand wins on record, 661 came by resignation and 362 by checkmate, so the technique tends to arrive eventually.

Rapid Is Home

Rapid is the preferred time control and the numbers agree. The strength-adjusted win rate in rapid (0.74) is far above blitz (0.61) and bullet (0.54), which makes sense for a player who likes to think for a few extra seconds before plumbing a long endgame. The rapid rating journey from 800 to a peak of 2426 is plotted below.

Bullet, meanwhile, is where the volume lives: hundreds of games, a peak better than 2600, and a longest winning streak of 35 games that presumably left a trail of bewildered opponents.

Rivals, Nemeses and Repeat Customers

Every chess player has a personal demon, and harry-chen's is ITakeTrenPassant, who holds a 6-1 edge in the head-to-head. Fewer than seven games, and one of them is a loss, which explains why that name probably triggers a small sigh before every queue. Abishrey Shrestha is another awkward matchup at 2 wins and 7 losses, while Bryan Shapiro provides the perfect grudge match at six wins and six losses across twelve games, the online chess equivalent of a recurring title fight.

Against stroopwafelen and the similarly named crowd of regulars, harry-chen generally comes out ahead, but it is the losing records that keep the rivalry section interesting.

Quirks and Fun Facts

  • Best hour of the day on record is 03:00, which is either extreme dedication or a sleep schedule in open rebellion.
  • Wednesday is the happy day: a 72.86 percent win rate. Sunday is the grumpy day at 57.5 percent.
  • Peak rapid rating: 2426 (2023-03-17), reached in March 2023, shortly after the account's first big surge.
  • The most common checking piece is the queen, which fits a player who would rather deliver the check than block it.
  • Checkmate wins number in the hundreds, yet resignation is the more common ending. harry-chen's opponents tend to do the sensible thing.

A Signature Amazon Attack

A short illustration of the Amazon Attack treatment: early queen activity, rapid development, and no patience for theory. Press play and watch the centre get claimed before the opponent finishes unpacking.

Whether harry-chen is grinding an endgame at three in the morning or defending a hopeless position long past any reasonable resignation point, the profile remains consistent: a d4 diehard with a deep repertoire, a stubborn streak, and a rapid record most players would frame.
