Grandmaster Igor Janik: The Caro-Kann Crusader of Online Blitz

Meet Igor Janik, also known as Igor_Janik, a FIDE Grandmaster who discovered that thousands of blitz games are the perfect way to spend a few years. With a peak blitz rating of 3136 (2026-07-24), a bullet rating that brushes 3061 (2026-01-18), and a rapid peak of 2759 (2021-02-14), Janik is a multitool of online chess warfare. He plays fast, fights late, and apparently never sleeps.

From Forgotten Account to Digital Grandmaster

Janik's journey on the site started quietly in December 2012 with two blitz games and a rating of 1445. Then, like a closed rook file, the account went silent for seven years. When he returned in late 2019, the chess world met a different Igor: a 2285 player who was just getting warmed up.

By 2020 he was playing hundreds of blitz games per month, and his rating shot past 2700, then 2800, then 2900. In July 2026 he touched a jaw-dropping 3136, a number that makes most club players reach for their glasses. His rise is best described with a chart, because words feel too slow.

A Repertoire Built on the Caro-Kann Defense and Chaos

Ask Igor Janik for his favorite date and he might say the Caro-Kann Defense, his most played opening with more than 2,000 blitz games. If it works, keep playing it, and Janik has the workload to prove it. When he has the white pieces he enjoys the Amazon Attack: Siberian Attack and the Sicilian Defense: Moscow Variation, both comfortably above 54% in his hands.

His style is not subtle. His games reach the endgame 86.15% of the time, and he averages nearly 90 moves per win. He grinds until the opponent cracks. A 78-game winning streak, a comeback rate of 86.98%, and a 51.91% win rate after losing a piece show that Janik treats a lost knight as a minor inconvenience.

Duels, Rivals, and a Nemesis Named sgchess01

Every hero needs an archenemy. For Janik, that is Szymon Gumularz, who has faced him 419 times. The ledger is oddly brutal: 145 wins for Janik, 176 for sgchess01, and 98 draws. Against the rest of the server Janik is a predator; against sgchess01 he is the prey that occasionally remembers how to bite.

He fares much better against other frequent rivals. Kevin Bordi has played him 110 times and trails 55 to 40. Against Bartlomiej Niedbala, Janik has a lopsided 60-18 record. These marathon rivalries define his online identity more than any trophy.

Night Owl Tactics and 5AM Brilliance

Janik's best hour is 5:00 AM, when his win rate climbs above 59%. His worst hour is 8:00 AM, which probably explains why he is not a morning person. With a tilt factor of 14 and an extremely low one-sided loss rate of 1.3%, he rarely gets steamrolled. If the position gets messy, that is exactly what he wants.

His favorite time control is blitz, and the numbers back him up. Across blitz games he has collected 7,671 wins, 5,291 losses, and 1,586 draws. His longest losing streak of 14 games proves even grandmasters have off days, but they usually bounce back by doing the only logical thing: playing more blitz.
