Chun Yung Samuel Lam is known to the online chess world simply as isfsam. From behind a modest username, he has become a FIDE Master and one of the most determined Blitz grinders around. He started with tournaments probably.
Despite his title, he does not spend most of his time at slow classical tables. His preferred time control is Blitz, and the numbers make that obvious: he has played thousands of Blitz games and only a few dozen Rapid games. If he can start a clock, he will not stop.
The Blitz Breakthrough
The story begins in 2016 with a rating that could fit in a suitcase. At one point isfsam dropped to a bullet rating in the high 800s, and his Blitz account had a dark valley near 674. The climb from there was not smooth. There were lean years, a handful of games, long pauses, and a stubborn 11-game losing streak somewhere along the road.
Then 2024 arrived. His Blitz pool jumped from the 1600s to past 2,200 in a few months. A year later the board started to groan; in 2025 and 2026 he became a regular visitor to the 2500 and 2600 territory. His peak Blitz number, 2783 (2026-08-14), says a lot about how much grind went into that rise. The chart below shows the shift from climbing a ladder to planting a flag.
It is not just the score that is big. With 1,948 wins and 1,158 losses in Blitz, he is exactly the kind of player who never logs off before nine. He also has a current winning streak of 4 games, and a very real 24 game ritual.
An Opening Repertoire That Ignores Quiet
Look at the opening data and one thing becomes obvious: isfsam does not fear the fringes, he orders them for delivery. As White he has played the Amar Gambit in a large portion of his bullet games, often with 61% success. That is not a move somebody else chooses by accident. It is a statement.
As Black his love for the Sicilian Defense: Alapin Variation is hard to miss, especially in Blitz, where he has a strong record from the Black side. He also punishes the Caro-Kann Defense and welcomes long endgames at a rate of nearly 75%. This is a player who believes the powerlines remain waiting until move 60.
He even has a nice 87% winning rate in games classified as "Unknown Opening", which may be the most fitting thing about him: he creates the diagrams and makes the database whisper.
The Long Relationship Rivals
Every grinder needs rivals, and isfsam has collected some true colleagues. His most frequent opponent is heartlessnesss, with 297 games of mutual energy. In those almost 300 encounters, isfsam has won 199 while losing 73. That is more than a small score; that is a professional friendship at 5 minute count.
Then there is Pui Yin Brandon Chan, his second most common dance partner with 156 battles and a lead of 94 wins to 55. Others like mindfulmountain and Jamison Kao have also spent hundreds of hours in the same queue with him. His head-to-head records are not just about rating, they are about friendship under the clock.
Staying on Until the Last Click
What separates isfsam from a normal Blitz clicker? Actually, he is a very unusual clicker. His early resignation rate is just 1.88%, meaning he almost never throws the flag before the truth comes out. After losing a piece, he is still dangerous, and he wins after a material loss about 54% of the time. His comeback rate sits around 83%, which is a disguise for someone who ends his games, whether by mate, timeout, or a very long resigned grumble.
He tends to make a plan in the first 6 moves of the game and then lives in the endgame. With a longest winning streak of 24 and a longest losing streak of only 11, he bounces back faster than most of us from a late day. If he has a peak time, the stats point to prime time, and if he has a style, it is the kind that keeps your clock never quite safe.
