Karthik Ramachandran: National Master of the Blitz Marathon

Meet Karthik Ramachandran, known to the pairing queue as karjanr. He is a National Master whose chess biography is written almost entirely in blitz ink: 10,702 wins, 10,472 losses, and 1,992 draws across more than 23,000 blitz games, plus nearly 3,700 bullet games and a mysteriously perfect daily record. A career-best blitz rating of 2588 (2025-11-21) arrived in November 2025, set during a month in which he played 388 blitz games. Some people have hobbies. Karthik has a cardio program.

The Daily Chess Paradox

Here is the twist worthy of a puzzle book: his preferred time control is Daily chess, and in that mode he is a flawless 9-0. Nine games, nine wins, zero losses, collected one careful move at a time across several years. The victims list reads like an opening syllabus, featuring the Caro-Kann Defense: Two Knights Attack, Mindeno Variation, the Czech Defense, the Slav Defense: Quiet Variation, Amsterdam Variation, and even a QGA sideline. Peak daily rating: 1135. It is a perfect record served like a tasting menu: unhurried, immaculate, and lightly unhinged.

His rapid career takes minimalism even further: eleven lifetime games, nine wins, one loss, one draw, and a peak of 2525 reached in July 2015. Why play hundreds of rapid games when eleven will do?

The Repertoire: 1.Nf3, Poisoned Pawns, and a Pterosaur

Roughly three of every four games now begin with 1.Nf3, flowing toward the London System, the Reti, and English setups. His great White romance is the Poisoned Pawn Variation of the London: 396 blitz games at about 40% wins, a scoreline that would end most relationships, but Karthik does not read scoreboards, he reads pawn structure.

Exhibit A, the line he keeps coming back to:

He also stays loyal to the Diemer-Duhm Gambit (313 games, nearly 53% wins), the Slav Bonet Gambit, and the gloriously prehistoric Colle Rhamphorhynchus Variation, an opening apparently named after a flying dinosaur that bites for a 61% win rate in bullet. On the black side, the Caro-Kann Defense has absorbed 836 blitz games, the Czech Defense 649, and the Najdorf Variation 633, the beloved heartbreaker of the collection. When bullet arrives, caution leaves the building: the Amar Gambit has been unleashed 143 times for a coin-flip score, because nothing says bullet like gambiting on move one at 1 a.m.

Rivals, Regulars, and the ortznoi57 File

Every marathoner needs pace-setters, and Karthik has a full roster. The all-time series leader is Eduardo Ortiz, met 54 times at 24-27-3, a rivalry so even it may simply never conclude. cruz29 (45 games, 18-24-3) plays the recurring headache, while madgenius99 (33 games, 22-8-3) supplies reliable serotonin. Ivan Illiev (35 games, 18-15-2) splits the difference. That is over 160 games against four humans, which is less a matchup list and more a chess family tree.

Playing Style: The Comeback Machine

Karthik's games are less sprints than slow-cooked stews. He is an endgame devotee with an 80% endgame frequency, an average win stretching to 81 moves, and a first capture usually waiting until move seven. Losing material barely registers: his comeback rate is roughly 89%, and he still wins 45% of games after dropping a piece. The early resignation rate is 0.65%, which means he does not resign so much as slowly make you prove everything twice.

And then there is the clock. Karthik has won 3,748 games by timeout against 1,828 timeout losses, confirming that when tactics fail, arithmetic wins. His favorite checking piece is the rook, with more than 22,000 rook checks delivered over the years, which is less a statistic and more a lifestyle. Best hour: 1 a.m. Best day: Saturday. Tilt score: a serene 12, remarkable for a man whose longest losing streak is also 12 games. He simply queues again.

  • Longest winning streak: 14 games. Longest losing streak: 12. Net effect: still queueing.
  • 2,052 wins by checkmate, 200 draws by stalemate, and 3,748 flags raised in victory.
  • Wins noticeably more often in casual games than rated ones, a true artist in his natural habitat.
  • By volume, an Amazon Attack: Siberian Attack practitioner, which sounds less like an opening and more like a wrestling move.

The Long Game: A Timeline Since 2011

2011: one rapid game, one win, career launched. 2013: the blitz explosion, climbing from roughly 1000 in September to over 2100 by November on the strength of several hundred games per month. 2015: the 2525 rapid peak, banked in a handful of July games. 2018: a bullet surge to 2431, including 554 bullet games in July alone, with the National Master title earned along the way. 2020: a spring dip into the high 2100s, answered the only way Karthik answers anything, by queueing. 2025: November brings 388 blitz games and a career-best blitz peak of 2588.

The moral of the story is refreshingly simple: pick a repertoire you love, refuse to resign, flag a few thousand people, and the rating takes care of itself.
