Jürgen Gegenfurtner (Kurai): FIDE Master, Blitz Marathoner, Daily Chess Undefeated

A chess biography of Jürgen Gegenfurtner, the FIDE Master who plays online as Kurai: 11,572 recorded games, an unbeaten daily record, a 28 game winning streak, and a man who will absolutely check you with a rook.

The Man Behind the Gloomy Username

Jürgen Gegenfurtner competes as Kurai, Japanese for "dark" or "gloomy", which accurately describes how opponents feel around move 40, right about when they realize they have wandered into an endgame they were never invited to. His surname sounds less like a person and more like a gambit your uncle invents after his second schnapps. He holds the FIDE Master title from FIDE, which he has supplemented with an unofficial qualification in psychological warfare.

The Long Climb, One Blitz Game at a Time

Kurai opened 2010 as a modest club level blitz player and then simply refused to stop playing. He crossed 2200 by mid 2011, spent 2012 and 2013 "collecting data", and then launched the great grinding campaign of 2015, peaking at 275 blitz games in a single month. His masterpiece was March 2023: 569 blitz games in thirty one days, a workload best described as agricultural. The climb never really stopped, and in 2026 it delivered a career peak of 2879 (2026-08-28).

Daily Chess: The Frame Worthy Record

His preferred time control is Daily, where he is officially undefeated: 18 wins, 1 draw, 0 losses. His daily rating has sat at 1369 (2023-01-22) since December 2020, apparently preserved like a museum exhibit, and the lone concession, a draw in the Scotch Game, remains under internal investigation. He is also unbeaten in rapid (7 0 1) and, after one bullet win in July 2010 with the Amar Gambit, retired from bullet forever. In every format he barely plays, Kurai never loses. Chess is only hard when he plays it a lot.

  • Caro-Kann Defense: 3 from 3, in two different flavors
  • King's Gambit Declined: Classical: 2 from 2

A Repertoire Built Like a Curiosity Cabinet

Blitz is where the repertoire gets strange. He has played the Four Knights Game 384 times, the English Opening: Agincourt Defense 363 times, and the Ruy Lopez: Berlin Wall 305 times, presumably because all 904 of his career draws need somewhere to live. As Black he has embraced the Blackburne Shilling Gambit 267 times, a trap so disreputable that playing it 267 times is a lifestyle choice. He also keeps the Diemer-Duhm Gambit warm, absorbs the Amazon Attack: Siberian Attack on a near weekly basis, and once deployed an Australian Defense 125 times with White for reasons history has not explained.

Nemesis Management

Eleven thousand games create relationships. Against rovokopac, his most played opponent, Kurai is 30 34 8 across 72 games, the longest running drama of his chess life. Against lokidamodred, the story is different: 54 wins, 2 draws and 0 losses in 56 games, which raises two questions. What did lokidamodred hope to achieve in game 55, and who sanctioned game 56?

The Kurai Way: Style, Habits and Alarms

  • Endgame frequency 88%: his blitz games average 86 to 90 moves. Bring a packed lunch and a support person.
  • Rook diplomacy: over 10,500 lifetime checks with the rook, his favorite piece. When Jürgen says hello, it arrives down an open file.
  • Comeback rate 90.5%: hang a piece against him and you have mostly just made the ending longer.
  • Tilt factor 14 out of 100: emotionally, he is a filing cabinet.
  • Morning lark: his win rate at 7 AM is 74.5%, around midnight it sinks to 31%, and at 5 AM it is a proud 0%. Challenge him before coffee at your own risk.
  • Friday slump: Friday is his weakest day at 44.3%, Wednesday his best. His longest winning streak ran 28 games; his longest losing streak, 14 games, was officially a research project.
  • Reluctant resigner: only a 13% early resignation rate. Kurai does not lose, he merely concludes.

The Final Word

Eleven thousand games, a perfect daily record, one immortal bullet win, and a blitz rating that kept climbing while everyone else went to bed. If chess is war, Jürgen Gegenfurtner is not the lightning raid; he is the siege. The campfires are lit, the rooks are loaded, and somewhere around 7 AM he is, statistically, unbeatable.
