Marvin Guevara

FIDE Master, blitz marathoner, and the internet's most loyal 1.f4 devotee.

The FIDE Master Who Chose the Fast Lane

Marvin Guevara, playing under the handle marvinguevara, is a FIDE Master with a not-so-guilty pleasure: blitz chess. Since first appearing online in August 2015, he has logged nearly 12,000 blitz games, transforming a modest 1351 debut into a career peak of 2381 (2024-12-11). That is not a hobby. That is a lifestyle, possibly a second job, and definitely a story about stamina.

The Ten Year Grind

Marvin's climb is best measured in volume. He once played 634 blitz games in April 2021 alone, roughly 21 per day, every day, rain or shine. By mid 2018 he had cracked 2100, December 2020 brought him past 2270, and on December 11, 2024, he touched a personal best of 2381. He then opened 2026 with two straight wins and the deepest opening preparation of his career, so somewhere out there, someone is nervous.

One Bird, Many Dragons

With White, Marvin opens 1.e4 with religious devotion, but his true love is the Bird Opening: Dutch Variation, Batavo Gambit, the most played opening of his entire career: 862 games from the White side plus 242 more defending against it. If that is not commitment, nothing is.

As Black, his staple is the Sicilian Defense: Accelerated Dragon (641 games), backed by the Closed Anti-Sveshnikov structures, the Dutch Defense, and a batch of French Defense and Alapin battles from the other side of the board. His most reliable scorer among major openings is the Czech Defense at a touch under 50%, and he also keeps a soft spot for the mysterious Colle [redacted] Rhamphorhynchus Variation, an opening so exclusive the game logs redact part of its name.

Grinder's Chess

Marvin does not do quick knockouts. He does endurance chess. More than three quarters of his games wander into the endgame, his average win lasts about 66 moves, and he rarely gets blown off the board. Down material? He still wins 41% of those games, and his comeback rate sits near 88%, so computers have learned not to celebrate early against him. His tilt factor is a remarkably chill 14, his longest losing streak (14 games) was survived and avenged by a 10 game heater, and his most common checking piece is the Queen, which has delivered over 11,000 career checks. That queen works overtime.

Frenemies and Nemeses

  • Santiago Guevara: 45 meetings, 34 wins, 10 losses and 1 draw. Marvin's personal shooting gallery.
  • Marvin Andrés Guevara Ruiz: the mirror match. Against a username that is essentially his own, Marvin is 24-3, meaning even Marvin cannot beat Marvin. Except Marvin beats Marvin. Regularly.
  • Noam Feinberg: the designated villain, at 3 wins, 14 losses and 3 draws. Every hero needs one.
  • moscovita: 6-14-2, another recurring headache Marvin keeps scheduling anyway.

The 2 AM Special

Marvin's win rate peaks at 2 AM and bottoms out at 11 AM, so the schedule writes itself: night games good, brunch rematches bad. Sunday is his best day, Tuesday his kryptonite. His relationship with other time controls is comedic: exactly one bullet game ever played, one loss, a 1929 peak rating achieved with zero wins, the loneliest peak in chess history. Daily chess follows the same script, one game, one loss, retired at a flawless 800. He is also noticeably deadlier in casual play, suggesting the man saves his best magic for when nothing is on the line.

The Bottom Line

Marvin Guevara is proof that mastery is mostly stubbornness. Over 5,100 blitz wins, a FIDE Master title, a decade of grind, and a repertoire built on a move most players stopped taking seriously decades ago. Respect the Bird, fear the Dragon, and whatever you do, do not celebrate early.
