Meet Mohamed Eltony

Mohamed Eltony, aka mohamedeltony1, is a rapid chess player who treats the chessboard like a treadmill: he just keeps going. Since early 2021, he has logged more than 5,000 rated rapid games. That is over two games a day, every day, for years. Some people collect stamps. Mohamed collects opponents.

A Wild Ride

Mohamed's rating graph has more ups and downs than a soap opera love story. He touched a rapid peak of 1330 in March 2021, then spent the next few years exploring every number between the high 600s and the low 900s. He once won 11 games in a row, which is impressive. He then lost14 games in a row, which is also impressive, just in a different way. His tilt factor of14 suggests those two facts are not unrelated.

Opening Repertoire: All of Them

Mohamed is not afraid of opening theory. He is more afraid of boredom. As White, he loves the English Opening;, and as Black, he has a long-term relationship with the Scandinavian Defense>. He also enjoys the Amar Gambit;, plus delights like the Australian Defense, the Amazon Attack, and the Barnes Opening Walkerling. If there is a weird linein the database, Mohamed has probably played it at least once, and probably also at 4 a.m.

His most-played Rapid opening lines, by sheer volume:

  • Amazon Attack:633 games
  • Scandinavian Defense:595 games
  • London Poisoned Pawn Variation:452 games
  • English Opening: Drill Variation:359 games
  • Australian Defense:290 games

Friends and Foes

Every chess journey needs a designated rival. For Mohamed, that is atteyya, who edged him 14 wins to12 over 27 rapid encounters. When Mohamed wants a confidence boost, he can face mohammadrashad, whom he has beaten 12 times while losing only once. And then there is seantbrady7, who shared 11 games with him, with Mohamed taking the honors 8 wins to2, plus a draw. The chessboard creates strange friendships.

The Comeback King

Down a piece? Down on time? Mohamed does not care. His comeback rate is75.95%, meaning he can turn lost positions into wins more often than a horror movie villain stays dead. Even after losing a piece, he still wins41.8% of the time. With an early resignation rate of just3.56%, he will happily play a technically lost endgame until the heat death of the universe, or until the server kicks him off, whichever comes first.

The 4 a.m. Legend

Mohamed's internal clock appears to be set to "chess o'clock." His best hour is 04:00, when his win rate jumps to54.55%. That means while most of us are arguing with ourselves about whether to get up for water, Mohamed is out there delivering checks with his queen, his rook, and apparently everything else. He averages about 60 moves per win, so a game against him is not a sprint. It is a full evening, or morning, of entertainment.
