Coach Chesswick
Hi Noah! Here’s some constructive feedback on your recent play.
What you’re already doing well
- Sharp tactical eye. You’re not afraid to look for direct threats, e.g. the miniature shows you can spot mates in a flash.
- Willingness to play actively. In many games you seize space with pawn thrusts (…g5, …h5, a-pawn storms) and keep the initiative rather than drifting into passivity.
- Comfort in messy positions. When the board explodes, you generally keep fighting instead of panicking—this fighting spirit is an asset.
Key themes to address
-
Early-queen habits.
Against newer players your quick queen raids work, but stronger opponents punish them (see the three losses vs. ChessPrinciples where the queen left the back rank too early). Aim to follow basic development rules: mobilise two minor pieces and castle before launching the queen. -
King safety.
In several defeats your king was stuck in the centre or walked to e2/e3. Make castling a priority move 7-10 unless a concrete tactic justifies otherwise. -
Over-extension.
Moves like 9…Bxb4 and 12…Nxb4 in the loss on 23 Aug grabbed pawns but left pieces hanging and the king exposed. Before taking material, run a quick checklist:- “What is my opponent’s most forcing reply?”
- “Will my piece have a safe retreat square?”
-
Opening repertoire.
Build one sound opening as White and one as Black so you aren’t improvising every game. A simple starting kit:- White: Italian Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4) leads to familiar structures.
- Black vs. 1.e4: Classical French (1…e6 2…d5) keeps the position solid.
-
Time management.
Some of your 3-min games finish in under 60 seconds total. Try sprinkling in 5 + 5 or 10-minute games so you can calculate instead of relying on intuition alone.
Training suggestions (next 4 weeks)
| Week | Focus | Daily Dose |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic openings (Italian & French) |
Watch one short video / read one article, then play 3 slow games applying the lines. |
| 2 | Tactics workout | 30-40 puzzles/day, write down the ones you miss to review patterns. |
| 3 | King safety drills | Set up positions where castling is possible; practise finding the safest move. |
| 4 | Game review | Self-annotate five of your own games without an engine, then compare with engine. |

Motivation corner
Your aggressive style is a great foundation—direct it through sound structure and you’ll climb rapidly. Aim for incremental goals: +100 rating in the next two months, consistent 65 % win rate in slow games, and a peak of 1208 (2017-06-02) to celebrate.
