Meet Obdal: The Rollercoaster Rook Wrangler

Obdal is a chess player whose rating history paints the picture of a resilient and passionate competitor, often riding the waves of victory and defeat with almost equal gusto. Known for a peak rapid rating of 550 back in September 2024, Obdal has shown a fervent love for the Bishop’s Opening and Scandinavian Defense, boasting win rates over 55% in these crafty lines. Despite a somewhat wild ride through wins and losses — 502 rapid wins to 513 losses — the spirit is anything but dampened.

Playing style? Obdal marches to the beat of the clock with an average game lasting around 43 moves when victorious but stretches to 56 moves on the tougher days—proof that they don’t give up easily. They are also no stranger to the psychological battlefield of chess: a tilt factor of 7 and a quirky early resignation rate of nearly 8% hint at the behind-the-scenes drama.

When it comes to timing, Obdal thrives in the evening rush hour of the chess world, with a sweet spot around 21:00 where wins soar. Sundays are good luck too, with a win rate nudging 55%, making it the perfect day for an epic comeback or a strategic showdown.

The Notorious Openings

  • Bishop’s Opening: 81 rapid games played with a commendable 55.56% win rate.
  • Scandinavian Defense: 27 games and another impressive 55.56% win rate.
  • Queen’s Pawn Opening Chigorin Variation: A sneaky favorite with a 57.14% win rate across 21 games.

Obdal’s tactical awareness shines brightest in comebacks, boasting a 67.4% comeback rate. Never count this player out—you might see them flipping the board (figuratively) after losing a piece, with a respectable 39.56% win rate even in those tough situations.

Recent Battles: Glorious Wins and Challenging Losses

Not one to shy away from dramatic finishes, Obdal’s latest triumph includes a swooping victory using the King's Pawn Opening King's Knight Variation. The match featured strategic queen maneuvers, culminating in a victorious resignation by the opponent. For fans who enjoy deep dive analyses, the moves read like a thriller:

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Bc5 3. Nxe5 Qf6 … 27. Kxf2 0-1

Not everything comes easy, though. Obdal’s recent losses in the Italian Game and Scandinavian Defense show that even masters have their off days, echoing the long journey of growth and learning every chess player faces.

A Fun Fact (or Two!)

  • Longest winning streak: 6 games. As they say, it’s good but still leaves room for more fireworks!
  • Longest losing streak: 7 games. The perfect amount to inspire a comeback saga worthy of epic chess tales.
  • Obsessive about opening variety: from classic King's Pawn gambits to secretive "Top Secret" blitz openings (yes, that one game!).

To sum up, Obdal is a chess warrior balancing the art of attack with the humor of a saint — resilient to setbacks and always ready to make the next move count. Whether you want to study their preferred openings or just enjoy the thrill of rapid chess, Obdal is a name worth remembering.

“In the face of checkmate, remember: It’s just a game… unless you’re Obdal, then it’s a rollercoaster ride!”

Hi Obdal! 👋 Great effort in your recent games.

Your current snapshot

  • Peak rapid rating: 672 (2025-09-26)
  • Typical openings as White: 1.e4 followed by Italian-style setups (Bc4, Nf3).
  • Typical openings as Black: Scandinavian (1…d5), Caro-Kann (1…c6) and assorted 1…e5 systems.

Here are two quick visualisations of your results so far:

What you’re already doing well

  1. Playing active, open positions. Italian and Scandinavian games give you plenty of tactics, which you seem to enjoy. In several wins you created early attacks (e.g. 5.Nxf7 in the Knight Attack vs paulinegaill).
  2. Fast development when you remember to castle. In your wins you usually reach safety by move 10–12 and then switch to attack.
  3. Finding mating nets. The miniature versus danny9041 finished with a nice queen mate (…Qe2#). Spotting those patterns quickly is a great sign! Keep sharpening that tactical eye.

Main improvement themes

  1. Piece safety: avoid hanging material.
    • Loss vs Garuda_Mas: 8…Qxg5 won your g-pawn but cost time; later 19…Nxb2 grabbed another pawn but let White’s rook invade.
    • Loss vs Zipfelmuetze: 13.Nf4 h5 14.Ne6? allowed …Bxe6 and your queen on e2 became a target.
Tip: Before every move, perform a 3-second “blunder check”: “If I move here, what can my opponent capture next move?”
  2. King safety: castle sooner.
In the two quick losses you delayed castling and the king was chased around (see 14…Nf6 15.d3 b5… in the loss vs Zipfelmuetze). Make castling a priority unless there is a concrete tactical reason to wait.
  3. Opening discipline.
Italian Knight Attack (5.Nxf7) is fun but objectively risky. Against stronger defenders you may fall behind. Mix in solid moves like 4.c3 & 5.d4 and learn basic ideas: control the centre, develop minor pieces before launching sacrifices.
  4. End-game technique.
When material is roughly equal you sometimes hurry and miss easy wins. Practise king-and-pawn endings so you feel confident converting an extra pawn instead of searching for tricks.

Action plan for the next two weeks

  1. Play 10 min (or longer) games and spend at least 15 seconds on moves 5-15, forcing yourself to blunder-check.
  2. Study one structured opening each side:
    • As White: Italian Game “Giuoco Pianissimo” (quiet lines).
    • As Black: Caro-Kann “Classical” (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3/Nd2 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Bf5).
Stick with them so you can focus on middlegame plans rather than move hunting.
  3. Tactics drills: 20 puzzles/day filtered for forks, pins & discovered attacks. See the definitions via fork, pin.
  4. End-game mini-lessons: king & pawn vs king, then rook vs pawns. Five minutes each day is enough at this stage.
  5. Review one of your own games daily.
    • Ask “Where was my last mistake before the evaluation dropped?”
    • Annotate one line that would have been better.
To get started, here is your latest win in a replayable format:

Motivation corner 🚀

You’re already beating players like rifqiradzi and danny9041. If you plug the few leaks above, a 500+ rating is well within reach. Remember: every blunder you eliminate is free rating points!

Good luck and have fun, Obdal. See you at the board!
