rFiveThirtyEight: The Forecast That Never Resigns

If a polling website ran a chess account, it would look a lot like rFiveThirtyEight (R538). This self-described statistics enthusiast joined online chess in November 2020, opened bullet chess at a wholesome 982, watched it crater to 592 by Christmas, and then spent the next six years proving the only reliable prediction is stubbornness. Today they sit at a peak of 2579 (2026-05-16) in bullet chess, backed by more than 41,000 games of raw data. The username promises 53.8% confidence. The playstyle delivers something scarier: they simply never stop.

The Bullet Chess Factory

Their home turf is Bullet chess, and "home turf" undersells it: over 30,000 bullet games and counting. Most tellingly, 9,727 of their wins arrived when the opponent's clock hit zero, versus just 3,411 by checkmate. Checkmate is elegant; the clock is family. The streak logs tell the same story: a 33-game winning streak, and a 21-game losing streak that they apparently filed under "variance" rather than "crisis."

Playing Style: The Comeback Machine

Opponents who "win" against R538 quickly learn the game is not over. Their early resignation rate is a microscopic 3.77%, so the resign button is basically decorative. Drop a piece on them and they come back to win an eye-watering 80.97% of the time, usually by dragging everything into an endgame, which happens in roughly three of every four of their games anyway. The first capture typically lands around move six: quiet, quiet, quiet, then the rooks arrive. Speaking of rooks, they have delivered more than 43,000 rook checks, making the rook their favorite way of saying hello.

Opening Repertoire: All Aboard the d4 Express

As White, R538 flirted with e4 for a month, then converted to d4 in 2021 with the zeal of the newly religious. Since 2022, e4 has appeared exactly 22 times, presumably by accident. The mainline weapon is the Amazon Attack (over 4,400 bullet games), flanked by the Australian Defense and a mischievous London Poisoned Pawn Variation. As Black, it is the Alekhine Defense (3,600+ bullet games of cheerfully inviting the knight chase), the sturdy Caro-Kann Defense, and the occasional bizarre Amar Gambit. A typical white setup, for the curious:

Foes, Frenemies, and Recurring Guests

The most-played list reads like a detective novel. GMinsight has absorbed 62 games and lost 52 of them, while jajaminks (50-4-1) and infinityloveraj (50-2) would like a word with the matchmaking algorithm. Then there is Wong Zhi Ying, the white whale: 104 meetings, a 44-59-1 record, and an unbroken commitment to trying again. DrShawnChessWorld holds the upper hand at 20-45-10, proving even forecasters have kryptonite. Replay their most recent recorded battle: View Their Latest Battle

Fine Print, Fun Facts

  • Their golden hour is 14:00, with a 56.9% win rate. Noon is kryptonite at 37.98%. Hangry chess is real chess.
  • They win roughly 31 percentage points more often in casual games than rated ones. Pressure, apparently, is optional.
  • Over 2,600 draws, including 405 stalemates. Stalemate collectors everywhere salute them.
  • Daily chess appearances are rare but terrifying: Amazon Attack: Siberian Attack 8-0-1, Australian Defense 7-1.
  • White wins 49.4%, Black 45.3%. Nearly colorblind, exactly as bullet chess demands.

The Long Climb: From 592 to the 2500 Club

The trajectory is the best part of this whole story. They crossed 2000 in bullet in early 2023, spent a year trading punches in the 2100 to 2200 range, then detonated across 2025 and 2026: peak ratings of 2579 in bullet, 2505 in blitz, 2494 in rapid, and a quietly respectable 1769 in daily chess. Two of the three major time controls cleared 2500, and rapid is knocking politely at the door. Watch the full ascent:

Any forecast worth its spreadsheet says the same thing: rFiveThirtyEight is still climbing, still flagging clocks, and 100% likely to press "new game" immediately afterward.
