Hi Ayyoob (SaatjieBal) đź‘‹

You have already shown a good feel for open positions and quick attacks at the 500-rating range. Let’s build on your strengths and patch a few recurring leaks so you can climb toward the next milestone.

What you’re doing well

  • Fast development & castling: In most of your wins you reach safety (e.g. 9…O-O in the London-System game) before launching counter-play.
  • Tactical alertness: Your 23.Rd8# miniature (see PGN below) shows good pattern recognition of back-rank weaknesses.
  • Confidence with imbalanced structures: Early …Bxc3+ to double enemy pawns or …g5 to attack demonstrates the willingness to leave your comfort zone and seize the initiative.

Quick fixes (will gain you rating fastest)

  1. Stop “instant resignations.” Five recent losses ended on move 0. If the first position you see is the initial setup, there is never a reason to resign—use the abort button or play on.
    → Easy rating points saved.
  2. Avoid weakening your king unnecessarily. Moves like …f6 and …g5 (A48 win) work versus sub-500 opposition but become targets later. Replace them with:
    • …h6 (preventing Bg5 without exposing your king)
    • …c5 / …e5 (counter in the centre instead of on the flank)
  3. Don’t move the same piece twice in the opening. In the Smith-Morra game you lost tempi with …Qa5-c4-a2-a3. Strive to develop each piece once before starting a tour of the board.
  4. Use more clock. You often finish 10-minute games with 6-8 minutes left. Spend 15-30 seconds on every critical turn to look for:
    • Checks
    • Captures
    • Threats (CCT)
A single avoided blunder is worth all that extra time.

Opening toolkit (simple & solid)

Pick one main line for each colour and drill it until the first 8-10 moves feel automatic:

  • With White: the London System (d4, Nf3, Bf4). Easy setup, low theory, good at our level.
  • With Black vs 1.e4: play …e5. You’ll learn classical piece placement and typical fork / pin patterns.
  • With Black vs 1.d4: the Queen’s Gambit Declined (d5, e6, Nf6, Be7). Sound and instructive.

Illustrative miniature

The following win captures several strengths—central play, tactical finish, quick development:

Next steps

  1. Add the three opening outlines above to your repertoire sheet.
  2. Play 20 rapid games applying the “no second moves in the opening” rule.
  3. After each game, note one position where you could have taken more time.

Stick to the plan and you’ll soon be challenging the 600-700 pool. Enjoy the journey, Ayyoob!
