Quick recap
Nice effort in a string of fast games. The most recent loss ended on time while the position was still playable. If you want to review the final position and clock pressure, check this game:
- Recent loss to mjjones901: Review this game
What you are doing well
- You pick solid, practical openings and get consistent results with the English Opening repertoire. Good foundation to build on. (English Opening)
- You look for active piece play and tactical chances rather than playing passively. That creates winning chances in blitz.
- You are willing to simplify or trade when appropriate — that shows good sense of when to reduce complications.
- Your opening preparation pays off frequently. Keep leaning into lines you understand instead of random moves.
Biggest areas to improve
- Time management. Several games end on time or with huge time pressure. In the most recent loss you ran out of time in a complicated middlegame. When short on time simplify or make safe useful moves (develop, trade, or centralize king) rather than hunting for long forcing continuations.
- Tactical accuracy under time pressure. A couple of losses show decisive tactical shots by your opponents or missed defenses from you. Rapid daily tactics practice will dramatically reduce these errors.
- Opening stability vs risky pawn pushes. A few games show early pawn moves that either open your king or create weak squares. Stick to solid plans in the first 10 moves and only commit pawn advances when they fit a plan.
- Endgame technique and practical conversion. When you reach an endgame or simplified position with little time, choose clear, easy-to-play plans (activate king, trade into a won pawn endgame) so you can execute under the clock.
Concrete drills (do these for the next 2 weeks)
- Tactics: 15 minutes daily on basic tactics (forks, pins, discovered attacks). Do focused sets, not random puzzles.
- 10 practice games with a focus on clock: play five-minute games with a 2-second increment, and try to keep at least 20 seconds on the clock after move 10.
- Opening drill: play 20 blitz games using one main English Opening line only. Learn 5 typical plans and one common tactical trick for both sides.
- Endgame basics: 10 short drills on simple rook and pawn endgames and king+pawn endings so you can convert with confidence when low on time.
Game-specific suggestions
- For the loss vs mjjones901 (review this game): you had active pieces but little time. Next time, when your clock is low simplify the position or make easy improving moves like centralizing the king, trading queens, or exchanging one set of rooks. That reduces calculation burden.
- For the very short game vs nader118 (see the opening): avoid reacting too quickly to early pawn thrusts. Pause one extra second on move 2 or 3 to check if a capture or pawn push creates tactical opportunities for your opponent.
- If opponents win by taking your f-pawn or hitting your king side often, be cautious about opening the f-file without calculation. Look for simple defenses like bringing a knight back or castling to safety first.
Next steps (this week)
- Run three 15-minute tactics sessions focused on forks and pins.
- Play 10 blitz games where your only goal is to keep 20+ seconds after move 10 and avoid flagging.
- Review one loss each session and write down one thing you could have done differently. Keep that note for the next game.
