Dmitri Petrov (Top4run): The Scandinavian Specialist of Blitz Chess

Dmitri Petrov, known across the online blitz chess scene as Top4run, is a grinder of the highest order. Across nearly a thousand blitz games and 505 wins, he has climbed to a personal best of 2752 (2026-01-26) one humble move at a time: 1...d5. His username may sound like a running app, but nothing gets away from him on the chessboard, least of all lost positions, which he rescues an astonishing 92.87% of the time.

Opening Repertoire: 1.e4 Meets 1...d5, Forever

As White, Dmitri is a man of exactly one word: 478 of his 482 games began with 1.e4. The other four first moves were experiments he presumably does not wish to discuss. His signature weapon is the Four Knights Game, a stately old main line he converts at nearly a 70% clip, backed by strong scores against the Caro-Kann Defense and the French Tarrasch.

As Black, the plan is refreshingly honest. In 228 games he has answered 1.e4 with the Scandinavian Defense and hovered right around 50%, which is exactly the point. He is not trying to out-theory you in the opening. He is inviting you into structures he has played hundreds of times, then outlasting you there.

Every repertoire has soft spots. The Slav Defense bothers him at 40%, the Amar Gambit has embarrassed him on occasion, and his 12.5% score in the English Caro-Kann system is a stat we agreed never to bring up again. Oops.

Playing Style: The Comeback Machine

Blitz games usually end quickly. Dmitri's wins average almost 79 moves, roughly 79% of his games reach a proper endgame, and that is where he does his damage: slowly squeezing small advantages while the opponent's clock quietly dies. He wins on time 132 times against only 18 flag losses, so clock management is a genuine weapon, not an accident.

Defensively he is a nightmare. He still scores over half his games after dropping a piece, his one-sided loss rate is a microscopic 1.28%, and his longest winning streak ran an incredible 16 games. His favorite way to say hello is a rook check, and when he lands the first check of the game he wins 62% of the time. In plain language: when the rook arrives uninvited, start packing.

Rivalries and Regular Dance Partners

Every long blitz career collects characters, and Dmitri's game log reads like a sitcom cast.

  • e1memeester: 13 games, 13 wins, 0 losses. At some point a head-to-head stops being a rivalry and becomes a subscription.
  • Pozeski-baja: 32 meetings and counting, with Dmitri leading 21-10-1. The closest thing to a classic derby in his history.
  • aimxtrainer: 0 wins, 5 losses, 1 draw. Whatever aimxtrainer is training for, it is clearly working.
  • antichessg: 3-10, a persistent thorn who apparently knows something the rest of the server does not.

Quirks, Habits, and the 6 AM Secret

  • Dawn patrol: his win rate at 6 AM is a blistering 83%, and Sunday is his most profitable day. Whether this is elite discipline or an alarm clock with a grudge, opponents hope they never find out.
  • Rated nerves: his win rate is nearly 48 points higher in casual games than rated ones, proof that "just playing for fun" and "playing for points" are entirely different sports.
  • Early exits: he resigns a touch quickly in about a quarter of his losses. Even marathoners occasionally call a taxi.
  • Draw allergies: only 70 draws in 965 games. Decisive chess or bust.

The Bottom Line

Dmitri Petrov is not flashy, but he is relentless. One opening as Black, one first move as White, rook checks at dawn, and lost positions treated like mild suggestions. The top four spots on the blitz ladder may want to keep looking over their shoulders, because Top4run is still running.
