Volkan Yirik: National Master of Bullet Chess

Volkan Yirik, known on the leaderboard as volkanyirik, is a National Master who took one long look at slow chess, politely declined, and committed himself to bullet chess with the devotion most people reserve for family, food, or sleep. Grinding since 2016, he has played more than 6,600 one-minute games and pushed his peak to 2687 (2026-07-31), which puts him firmly in the category of opponents who flag you before you have finished deciding whether to castle.

The Bullet Grinder

Volkan's online career is not a career so much as a siege. He plays constantly, he plays fast, and he plays through absolutely everything, including the parts where most humans would already be reaching for the resign button.

  • Longest winning streak: 30 straight bullet wins, a run long enough to raise serious questions about whether he ever blinked.
  • Longest losing streak: 23 games in a row, weathered with a tilt factor of just 23 out of 100, meaning he stays calmer than most people waiting for coffee.
  • Comeback rate: 86%. If Volkan is losing, the game is apparently still negotiable.
  • Early resignation rate: 1.4%. He does not resign. You will have to checkmate him or out-flag him, no shortcuts.

Opening Repertoire: 1.e4 and the Prehistoric Birds

As White, Volkan opens with 1.e4 the overwhelming majority of the time and then steers into the Sicilian Defense: Closed, a line he has hammered out over 800 times in bullet alone. As Black, he leans on the flexible Modern Defense and, when feeling dangerous, the gloriously named Modern Defense: Pterodactyl Variation. His repertoire even dabbles in the Amar Gambit, because sometimes a knight to the edge of the board on move one is not a blunder, it is a statement. He also keeps a soft spot for the Caro-Kann Defense, proving that under all the speed chess chaos beats the heart of a classical player.

Playing Style: Grind Now, Flag Later

Do not let the time control fool you. Volkan's wins are marathons: the average victory stretches nearly 78 moves, and endgame positions appear in about 79% of his games. His favorite checking piece is the queen, with the rook breathing down its neck, because in bullet chess you do not check politely, you check repeatedly. He has over 800 bullet wins by checkmate, apparently just in case winning on time started feeling too easy, and he still wins more than 41% of games even after dropping a piece, which is either impressive calculation or a stubborn refusal to accept obvious facts until the clock intervenes.

Rivals and One Recurring Nightmare

Every bullet grinder needs a stable of regular sparring partners, and Volkan has assembled one the hard way, mostly by playing the same people over and over until one of them surrenders their rating points.

  • sjakkongen_09: the most played rivalry at 76 games, with Volkan clawing out 23 wins, which in nemesis terms counts as a healthy rivalry.
  • CerealKiller60: 49 games and 21 wins, the closest thing to a fair fight in the catalog.
  • Hoang Thong Tu: 32 games, 0 wins, 30 losses, 2 draws. A stat line best described as "a rematch problem." Respect for continuing to queue it up.

The 4 AM Assassin

According to his own stats, Volkan's best hour to play is 4:00 in the morning, where his win rate sits at a suspicious 100%. This is less a chess strategy and more circadian warfare: opponents are groggy, Volkan is fully operational, and the flag falls before anyone's coffee kicks in. Away from bullet, he keeps a Blitz rating that once peaked at 2526, plus a grand total of eight daily games, presumably played to prove he is capable of waiting for things. A National Master title and a love of one-minute chess were not supposed to coexist, but nobody appears to have told Volkan that.
