Quick recap — recent games to review
Nice run recently — some clean finishes and one game to learn from. Open the games below to jump into the exact moments I mention.
- Latest win — active piece play and a clean finish: Review this win vs solemn_protagonist (Petrov's Defense, see Petrov's Defense).
- Clear tactical finishes — model checkmate and rook activity: Win vs rikhilsbhara.
- Strong convert-to-checkmate example: Win vs niregoredd.
- Most recent loss — tactical oversight late in the game: Loss vs andranik_25 (Sicilian lines, see Sicilian Defense).
What you're doing well
- Active piece play — you use rooks and bishops aggressively to create threats and force simplifications. That paid off in your Petrov win where you converted initiative into a decisive attack.
- Finishing ability — multiple wins ended in checkmate or decisive tactics rather than grinding for a technical edge. That shows good awareness of mating nets and back-rank motifs.
- Opening choices that fit your style — you have a strong record with the French Defense. Keep the lines you understand well and refine them.
- Improving rating trend — your recent month-to-month progress shows you are on an upward path. Keep the momentum.
Where to focus — clear, actionable improvements
These are the highest-impact areas that would give the biggest boost in rapid play.
- Stop missing opponent threats in complex positions. In the loss vs andranik_25 you kept pushing activity but missed a sequence that turned the game around. Before every move ask: "What is my opponent threatening next?"
- Time management for 10-minute games. You play only with the clock. Keep a time buffer for critical middle and late game decisions. Aim to keep at least two minutes into move 25 in a 10|0 game.
- Watch the trade decisions. You sometimes trade into positions where opponent's counterplay is stronger. Before a trade, verify the resulting king safety and pawn structure — especially rooks on open files.
- Patch weaker openings. Your London System Poisoned Pawn line has a low win rate. Either study the main traps and typical plans or avoid that sharp line until you feel confident.
- Endgame technique — focus on rook and minor piece endgames. You finish well tactically but consolidating basics (active king, rook behind passed pawns, cutting the king off) will turn close games into wins more often.
Concrete training plan (weekly)
- Daily (15–25 minutes): tactics puzzles — prioritize pins, forks, discovered attacks and back-rank mates. Do mixed difficulty; spend extra time on puzzles you miss and understand why.
- 2× per week (30 minutes): endgame drills — rook vs rook, Lucena and Philidor ideas, king activity exercises. Practice converting a one-pawn advantage with the rook.
- 1× per week (30–45 minutes): opening sharpening — pick one opening you play often (e.g., the Petrov or the French) and learn one typical plan and one tactical trap. For an opening with a low win rate, either remove it from your repertoire or study its critical line.
- After each session or following a set of 3 games: review one loss and one win. First do a self-review without engine, note 2 candidate moves you considered, then check with engine for the real mistake and the improvement.
- Play a few practice games with incremental time controls (for example 10+5). The small increment prevents flagging and helps you practice deeper calculation under pressure.
Concrete in-game checklist
- One-minute quick scan after opponent move: check for direct captures, checks, pins, and threats.
- If you plan an attack, check opponent counterplay first — can they open a file, create a passed pawn, or trade into a superior endgame?
- Prefer piece activity over grabbing pawns unless the pawn gain is safe and doesn’t weaken your king or allow tactical shots.
- When ahead in material simplify only if the resulting endgame is clearly winning. If unclear, keep tension and look for a forcing way to win.
- Keep time targets: first 15 moves in 5–6 minutes, maintain 3–5 minutes by move 25 in a 10-minute game.
Short study tasks — next 7 days
- Day 1–3: 50 tactics puzzles total (mix easy and medium). Review missed puzzles.
- Day 4: 1 hour of rook endgames (Lucena/Philidor).\n
- Day 5: Study the critical line you lost in vs andranik_25. Replay the final 10 moves and ask "what did I miss?" — then check with an engine.
- Day 6: Play two 10+5 rapid games and apply the in-game checklist.
- Day 7: Review one win (the Petrov game vs solemn_protagonist) and note 3 decisions you made that led to the win. Reinforce those patterns.
Next steps — review these games now
- Study your latest win: Win vs solemn_protagonist — see how you built the attack.
- Study the loss and look for the tactical oversight: Loss vs andranik_25 — find the turning point.
- If you want, send me one of your analyzed games (your notes + engine checks) and I will give a focused follow-up plan for that line.
Quick encouragement
You are trending up and converting chances into wins more often. Keep the tactical practice and the endgame drills and your rapid rating will follow. Small adjustments to time management and threat-checking will yield big gains. Let's keep building on this.
