Coach’s Feedback for donsuos

Snapshot

You are currently a high-2100/low-2200 blitz player with a strong taste for sharp, counter-attacking openings (Benko / Benoni, King’s Gambit, early …c5 against 1 d4). Your recent results show convincing tactical kills but also several time-pressure collapses and some avoidable king-safety accidents.

Progress target: reach 2511 (2019-03-04) + 30 by stabilising your time-management and tightening your defensive technique.

What You’re Doing Well

  • Initiative-first mindset. Games vs Jeffreyb1234 and Keccind show how you are willing to sacrifice pawns for piece activity and open lines.
  • Tactical alertness. You rarely miss direct shots – see 27…Rf4!! against keccind, and the mating net 44…c2+-47…d2# in your latest win.
  • Conversion in won positions. Once you reach a clearly better endgame you generally finish cleanly (e.g. 49.Rc8# vs milancecaric).

Recurring Issues to Fix

  1. Clock control. Four of your last six losses were on time. You often burn >60 % of your clock before move 20.
    • Goal: keep at least 90 s after move 20 in 5 | 0. Practise “hand-moves” in known openings to save time.
  2. King safety in double-fianchetto structures. In the loss to yairka you entered a Benoni set-up but weakened dark squares (…f5/…b6) and were mated on f8.
    • Drill: play out 10 sample Benoni middlegames vs engine set to 2200 while focusing only on not allowing queen-plus-minor-piece attacks on the dark squares.
  3. Over-extension of central pawns. Pushing both f- and e-pawns (e.g. vs Rentner56) left back-rank pieces undeveloped and targets on e3/e4.
    • Rule of thumb: after two pawn breaks in the centre, spend one move on development or king safety.

Two-Week Action Plan

  • Play 20 blitz games starting the clock with 10 sec “mental increment”: make the first 10 moves instantly if you have seen the position before.
  • Analyse every loss for why the clock reached under 30 s – note whether it was opening unfamiliarity, tactical calculation or hesitation.
  • Add one solid back-up line against 1 d4 (e.g. QGD) to use when you’re tired, saving the Benko for when you feel sharp.
  • Daily puzzle rush (survival, 15 min cap) to keep sharpening calculation while reinforcing pattern memory.
  • Endgame mini-routine: 10 “rook + pawns vs rook” studies; you missed several simple technical wins in the marathon vs trotil81 and almost flagged.

Key Term to Remember

Seek the zwischenzug. Many of your best moves (17…Rb4, 27…Rf4) were intermezzos. Consciously asking “Do I have a forcing intermediate move?” each turn will lift conversion.

Nice Finish of the Week

Relive your crisp Benko victory below. Try to spot all the tactical resources before the engine does:

Final Word

Your attacking instincts make you a dangerous opponent for anyone in the 2200-2300 range. If you pair that with disciplined clock usage and a slightly calmer opening back-up, you can push toward 2300+ confidently. Keep the pieces active, keep the king safe, and remember: good habits off the board win games on it. Happy hunting!
