Federico Rocco: Candidate Master of the Bullet Chess Frontier
Federico Rocco, known at the board as Federrocco, is a FIDE Candidate Master who has spent the better part of a decade proving that in chess, the clock is just another opponent to beat. His record includes more than 40,000 rated games, the vast majority played at bullet speed, which makes him less a chess player and more a long-distance sprinter who never leaves his chair.
The Long Climb Out of the Low 1300s
Every great story needs an unglamorous origin. Rocco's begins in September 2016 with a bullet rating of 1362 and what can only be described as optimistic body language. The years that followed were a slow avalanche of pre-moves: the 2000s arrived by his first winter, the 2300s by 2020, and in April 2025 he touched a peak near the top of the online ladder, a gain of nearly 1,400 points one sixty-second game at a time. His current ceiling stands at 2781 (2025-04-14).
A Repertoire from the Age of Reptiles
Rocco's opening choices read like a natural history exhibit. As White, his signature is the Colle System's semi-redacted Rhamphorhynchus Variation, deployed in more than 3,400 games and named after a flying reptile, which feels appropriate for a man who plays as though the meteor has already been sighted. Rocco's statistical profile reads like an endurance athlete's. He resigns early in under 2% of his games, because a position is not lost until the king falls or the flag does. His comeback rate is 83.7%, he still wins more than he loses after dropping a piece, and he has delivered checkmate to more than 6,400 opponents, with well over 7,000 additional wins on time. The queen is his instrument of choice for harassment, responsible for the lion's share of his 120,000-plus checks, and he lands the first check 57% of the time, which conveniently coincides with winning about 60% of those games.
