Hippolyte Feyte: The Relentless Gambit Enthusiast

Known in the chess community by the username hippolytefeyte, this player has turned the noble game of chess into a rollercoaster of daring attacks, narrow escapes, and occasional traps set more by optimism than strategy. With a peak rapid rating just over 1000, Hippolyte has faced countless battles in rapid time controls—where the clock ticks fast and tactics must be sharper than a cat’s claws.

Despite an initial rocky start, losing the first three rapid games in 2021, Hippolyte’s perseverance is impressive. Over hundreds of games, their near-even win-loss record in rapid—367 wins to 359 losses—reflects grit and a fighting spirit. The average game length when winning stretches to about 47 moves, showing Hippolyte doesn't shy away from long, strategic scrambles, patiently grinding out victories.

Blitz and bullet chess might not be Hippolyte’s forte—win rates in these faster formats hover below 30% and 20% respectively—but no one can fault the attempt! The slowest time control, Daily chess, provided a peak rating of 1200, proving that when Hippolyte has time to think, the moves get a bit more polished (though the results in those games are admittedly sparse).

Playing Style & Quirks

  • Early resignation rate: Approximately 16.5% — Hippolyte knows when a game is cooked, but also might occasionally throw in the towel a bit soon when the going gets tough.
  • Endgame frequency: Nearly 35% of games reach the endgame, showing resilience to fight late into the battle.
  • Comeback power: A stunning 57.5% comeback rate — Hippolyte loves a good plot twist, often turning games around even after losing material.
  • Tilt Factor: At a manageable 13%, this player keeps their cool on most days, though three consecutive losses might sting a bit.
  • Best Time to Play: At 3 AM, Hippolyte seems to enter a mysterious genius mode where opponents beware.

Recent Triumphs and Tribulations

Among Hippolyte’s most celebrated recent moments was a 2023 rapid game finishing with a beautiful checkmate after a tenacious attack and positional dance involving a sneaky queen maneuver and patient bishop play. The victory clinched by a final queen checkmate (Qxf8#) was a testament to Hippolyte’s boldness under pressure.

Yet, even heroes stumble — not long ago, Hippolyte suffered defeat on time in a daily game and a tough strategic loss in a rapid battle, but these setbacks only fuel their hunger to improve. To them, every blunder is just another step on the road to glory.

Record & Rivalries

Hippolyte has engaged extensively with opponents ranging from casual to highly competitive. Intriguingly, against users like nithin0202, kaanmel, and grandflopperrob, Hippolyte boasts a perfect 100% win rate, while others like awizerrr have proven more challenging.

A Final Note

With a chess journey marked by perseverance over hundreds of games, a fearless attacking style, and a stubborn refusal to quit (even when the queen has taken an unexpected stroll off the board), Hippolyte Feyte embodies the true spirit of the game: learning, improving, and always looking for the next clever move. Whether it's rapid, blitz, or daily, this player is a community favorite – an underdog with an unyielding chess heart.

Coach's Avatar

Hi Hippolyte Feyte!

You are an imaginative attacker who is never afraid to look for mating ideas. At your rating level that courage wins a lot of games, and it will keep serving you well once it is paired with a bit more structure.

What you are already doing well

  • Tactical alertness. In your latest win you spotted the deflection 31.Qxd8+ and the back-rank mate 32.Qxf8# — excellent pattern recognition.
  • Playing for the initiative. You often seize space with pawn thrusts (e4/e5, g4/g5) and put your opponent on the defensive.
  • Fast decision making. Your clock management in 5-minute games is good; you reach winning positions with plenty of time left.

Biggest improvement opportunities for the next month

  1. Develop pieces before the queen.
Early queen sorties (Qa4+, Qb3, Qh5, etc.) give short-term checks but often fall behind in development. Try the “four-move test”: if your queen move will not create a concrete threat in four ply, develop another piece instead.
  2. King safety first.
Four of your last five losses featured an uncastled king in the centre. Make castling a default goal unless you see a direct tactical reason not to.
  3. Cut down on loose pawn pushes.
Moves like 5.g4 and 6.g5 (loss vs Artin_pro2) weakened dark squares and invited …Qxg5. Use pawn storms after you are ahead in development, not before.
  4. Slow down for one blunder-check.
Before every move ask, “What are all the things my opponent can do next?” This single habit will reduce dropped pieces by 50 %+ at your level.

Opening corner

• When you open 1.d4 d5 2.c3 you are entering the Colle-Zukertort / Saragossa territory. Aim for the clean setup d4–e3–Nf3–Bd3–O-O–Re1–e4. Skip early queen checks; they do not fit the system.

• With 1.e4 stick to a simple repertoire: Italian Game as White, Scandinavian or French as Black. Those lines teach development and king safety without tons of theory.

Key tactical moment

The finish of your last win — notice how every move is check or mate:

Mini training plan (4×30 min per week)

  1. 15 min: Solve 10–15 mate-in-two puzzles to sharpen calculation speed.
  2. 10 min: Review one of your own games; locate the first move you would change.
  3. 5 min: Play the “opening rehearsal” — set up an empty board and develop to a safe castled position in 12 moves.

Tracking your progress

• Current personal bests: 1002 (2021-01-15), 956 (2022-06-25)

Glossary refresh

Deflection: Forcing a key defender away.
fork: A single move attacking two (or more) enemy pieces at once.
Zwischenzug: An intermediate move, often a check, played before recapturing.

Stay curious, keep the king safe, and enjoy the journey. One disciplined habit at a time will push you well beyond 800 rapid before the end of the season.
