Jón Kristinn Thorgeirsson (Jokksi99): Iceland's Bullet Chess Machine
The Saga Begins
Every good Icelandic saga needs a hero with a magnificent name and an unreasonable amount of confidence, and Jón Kristinn Thorgeirsson fits the bill nicely. Known online as Jokksi99, he is an Icelandic FIDE Master who has been a fixture of online chess since April 2009, when he opened his account with a perfectly balanced 1-1 record. He has spent the years since making sure that balance never happened again.
Across more than 17,000 games and over 10,700 wins, Jón has built his legend in bullet chess, the time control where the clock kills you faster than the pieces do. Friends call him Jokksi. Opponents call him worse things, quietly, while their flags fall.
The Bullet Years: 1770 to 2966
Jón's first bullet game came in October 2009, a win that left him rated 1770. Most people would call that a decent start. He apparently called it a floor. Over the following years he climbed past 2000, broke 2500 in early 2016, stormed through 2700 in late 2020, and finally touched a peak of 2966 in October 2026, knocking politely on the door of 3000.
Along the way he has stacked up more than 4,000 bullet wins, including a flawless 22-0 month in August 2026 while rated around 2900. For variety he also keeps a blitz peak of 2863, which is what happens when a bullet specialist agrees to slow down by a few seconds out of politeness.
- Peak bullet rating: 2966, reached October 2026
- More than 4,000 bullet wins and counting
- A perfect 22-0 month in August 2026
- A longest winning streak of 127 games
The Great Slump of 2015 (and the Revenge Tour)
Even saga heroes hit rough patches. In the autumn of 2015, Jón endured a 104-game losing streak, the kind of stretch that makes a reasonable person consider taking up checkers. His daily rating slid from the mid-1800s all the way down to 1595.
His response was swift and slightly alarming: in December 2015 he played 69 games, won 62 of them, and lost 5. That set the tone for a career defined by resilience. Jón comes back to win roughly 77% of games that once looked lost, and even after dropping a piece he still wins nearly 58% of the time. The man does not know when he is beaten, mostly because he refuses to check.
Openings: Handpicked Chaos
Jón's repertoire reads like a dare. Among his most trusted weapons are the Barnes Defense, which he wins a startling 90% of his daily games with, the Amar Gambit, and the Australian Defense, which converts at over a 91% clip with White. Mainstream theory exists. He has simply chosen not to participate.
There is one thorn in the bouquet: the Sicilian Taimanov, American Attack, against which he holds a losing score across more than 150 daily games. He keeps playing it anyway, which tells you everything you need to know about his relationship with the Sicilian.
Style: The Patient Berserker
Here is the twist: for a speed demon, Jón is remarkably patient. About 70% of his games reach the endgame, his first capture comes on average around move six, and while his wins average 63 moves, his losses drag on for 79. Translation: if you beat him, you will have earned it, and you will be tired.
He resigns early in only about 2% of his defeats, and he has delivered more than 13,000 checks with the queen alone. When Jón checks first, he wins about 68% of the time, so opponents have learned to dread an early queen sortie more than most natural disasters.
Rivalries Forged in the Arena
No saga is complete without sworn enemies. Jón's most frequent sparring partner is Leo Bispo, against whom he has logged 124 games at 69-48-7, a rivalry that has likely outlasted several governments. He is dead even at 18-18-5 with Anselm Wagner, a balance so perfect it feels intentional, and he dominates mike5972p at 30-6. Meanwhile grandemas has taken 43 shots at him and sits at 28-14-1, a username that promises warm cookies and delivers bullet wounds.
Dawn Patrol
Jón's win rate peaks at 6 a.m., where he wins nearly 70% of his games, with 4 a.m. close behind. Tuesday is his best day of the week and 11 p.m. his worst. Whether this reflects iron discipline or simply the Icelandic summer sun refusing to set, the results speak for themselves: if you must play Jokksi99, do it late at night, and pray.
Jón by the Numbers
- 17,180 games played across all time controls
- 10,766 career wins
- Longest winning streak: 127 games
- Endgame frequency: about 71% of games
- Early resignation rate: a stubborn 2.3%
- Most common checking piece: the queen, by a landslide
Final verdict: a FIDE Master with the speed of a bullet and the patience of a glacier, which, given his homeland, feels scientifically appropriate.
