Coach Chesswick
Hi mangomighy! 👋 Quick Snapshot
- Current range: 1000-1100 in 3-min blitz.
- Favourite set-ups: Nimzowitsch-Larsen (1.e3/1.b3) as White; Modern/Pirc structures (…g6/…d6) as Black.
- Peak so far: 1324 (2023-06-07) (keep pushing!)
What’s already working
- Active piece play. In many wins you seize the initiative quickly, e.g. the exchange sacrifice 16.Rxh8! followed by 17.Rxg8+ that ripped open Black’s king.
- Pawn storms & passed pawns. Your g- and h-pawns often decide the game. A nice illustration:
- Fighting spirit. You rarely give up, and many games swing back in your favour because you keep creating threats.
Highest-impact fixes for the next 200 points
- Time Management
- Six of the last 10 results (both wins & losses) ended on time. Try a few 5 + 3 games to practise making a quick plan, then executing without bullet-style hovering.
- Early King Safety
- When you push the f-pawn (f3/f4) before castling, your king can become a target (see your loss vs SunanCorp, move 21…Qf2+!).
- Rule of thumb: castle before launching pawns or bring the queen back to defend light squares.
- Central Development vs Flank Moves
- 1.e3 & 1.b3 are fine, but sometimes you delay central occupation too long. Opponents equalise by …d5/…e5 and quick queenside pin (…Bb4).
- Add one classical opening to your repertoire (e.g. the Italian or Queen’s Gambit). You’ll learn traditional centre themes that transfer back to your Larsen lines.
- Tactics: Spot the Counter-punch
- You spot your ideas quickly but occasionally overlook opponents’ resources (e.g. 24…Qxd4+ in your most recent loss).
- Daily routine: 15 Puzzle Rush + 5 rated puzzles focusing on pins, forks and the zwischenzug.
Opening Drill (White)
1. b3 (control e4, prepare Bb2) 1…d5 (most common) 2. Bb2 Nf6 3. e3 (solid) → remember to follow with d4 soon 4. Nf3 e6 5. d4 (centre strike)
Commit this five-move backbone to muscle memory; then you can spend time on plans rather than move-order questions.
Opening Drill (Black)
Your Modern set-up is fine, but avoid automatic …Nc6 versus d4; it can block your c-pawn break. Typical plan:
1.d4 g6 2.Nf3 Bg7 3.c4 d6 4.Nc3 e5!
Practical Training Plan
- 3 rapid (10 + 5) games per week → annotate yourself, then check with engine.
- Daily: 20 min tactics + 10 min endgame drill (king & pawn vs king, basic rook endings).
- Weekly: review one master game that starts with 1.b3 or the Modern Defence; note typical pawn breaks and piece placements.
Motivation Corner
You’ve already jumped from sub-900 to 1050 in a month. Stay consistent with the habits above and 1200+ will arrive sooner than you think. Enjoy the journey, keep those pawns rolling, and good luck in your next games!
