What you’re already doing well

  1. Tactical alertness. In your last win against dr-papa you spotted 21…Qd2+?? and instantly replied 22.Nxd2, winning the queen. Good job capitalising on opponent errors.
  2. Using the open board. In several wins you pushed central pawns (e- and d-files) to open lines for bishops and rooks. Keep this habit – open files help create real threats.
  3. Time management. In 15 + 10 you usually keep >10 min after move 15. That means you are not panicking on the clock – well done.

Key growth areas (and how to train them)

  1. Replace the Wayward Queen Attack.
2.Qh5 wins some quick games, but four of your last six losses started with an early queen adventure that back-fired. Try one of these:
    • Italian Game: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 – solid, develops pieces, keeps the queen safe.
    • Scotch Game: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 – still tactical but sound.
Tip: pick one line, watch a 10-minute video, then play five rapid games with only that opening.
  2. King safety first.
In every lost game your king stayed in the centre past move 12. Make it a habit: “If castling is legal and safe, do it.” Drill: set up the starting position and play the first 10 moves against the computer, always castling by move 8; repeat 20 times.
  3. ‘Checks-Captures-Threats’ scan.
Moves like 9…Qd8? (loss vs imdmd1510) or 21…Qd2+?? (win vs Dr-Papa) show both sides missing forcing moves. Before pressing “Move”, ask:
“What are all the checks, captures or mate threats for both sides?”
It takes 10 seconds and prevents most blunders.
  4. Knight & bishop coordination.
Several games feature knights hopping to the rim (Nb5, Nh3, …) without a plan. Practice this mini-exercise: set up four knights vs four pawns and try to win a pawn without putting a knight on a1/h1/a8/h8. You’ll feel how central squares give more options.
  5. Endgame basics.
Because many of your games end in early resignations, endgames are unfamiliar territory. Spend 10 minutes/day on:
    • King + pawn vs king
    • Opposite-coloured bishop endings
    • Rook activity on the 7th rank
Lichess/practice or a physical board both work.

Homework corner

  1. Play five rapid games without moving your queen before move 10.
  2. After each game, run the Chess.com “Key Moments” tool and write down one missed tactic.
  3. Finish with a 5-minute puzzle streak session; stop after your first mistake and review it.

Motivation boost

Remember: every 100-point jump for beginners usually comes from fixing one bad habit. This month make it “castle early, queen late.” See you at 700+ soon – good luck and have fun!
