Profile
Evgeny Volkov (Евгений Волков), better known to the internet as vev1984, is a relentless Blitz bruiser. His online career began in 2017, and within eight years he climbed from a promising newcomer to a genuine online force, peaking at 2610 (2026-02-22) in Blitz. He plays with volume, with venom, and with a comeback rate that suggests he does not believe in lost causes.
From Grinder to Gunslinger
Evgeny's path to the top was not a straight line. Early ratings wobbled, but the trend was unmistakable: he kept improving, kept grinding, and eventually broke through the 2500 barrier in 2025. His workload is legendary. In March 2025 alone he played 349 Blitz games, winning 162 of them, and by early 2026 he was touching career-best form.
Playing Style
Do not expect quick handshakes. Evgeny's victories average more than 85 moves, and he reaches the endgame in over 76 percent of his games. He is also extremely difficult to put away: his comeback rate sits near 89 percent, and even after losing a piece he still wins nearly half the time. Facing Evgeny means you have to finish the job, because he will not finish it for you.
Opening Repertoire
As White, Evgeny favors flexible setups and punishing lines:
- Réti Opening as his go-to first move, with a solid 50 percent Blitz score.
- English Opening in its symmetrical and Anglo-Indian flavors.
As Black, he is far from shy, regularly reaching for the sharp Sicilian Defense, the tricky Alekhine Defense, and the battle-tested King's Indian Defense. His best results in the Sicilian Dragon are a warning to anyone who plays into his favorite lines.
Rivalries
No Blitz career is complete without nemeses. Evgeny's most frequent foe is Zoar Prodhan, who has faced him seven times and holds a narrow 4-3 edge. There is also Karl Tolentino, a six-game rivalry that is dead even, and austrianbeerlover, who gives as good as he gets. Against Z I and alouatta_palliata, Evgeny has the upper hand, and he clearly enjoys the rematch culture of online chess.
Personality on the Clock
Evgeny is a creature of habit. His best hour is 13:00, his strongest day is Saturday, and his longest winning streak is eight games. He wins far more often by resignation and timeout than by checkmate, which says a lot: opponents do not just lose to him, they give up. For Evgeny Volkov, the game is never over until the clock hits zero and the king falls.
